Goal: Investigate string of killings involving several horses.
A New Mexico town has become the hunting ground for a serial horse executioner. A total of seven horses have been shot to death in Cloudcroft. The bodies of the animals were discovered in remote locations.
An unknown person or persons shot five of the horses in a short span of time. A few weeks later, two more deceased horses were found. All of the animals had been left to the mercy of scavengers. Little investigation appears to have taken place, since an animal advocacy group—and not law enforcement—is offering an award for information. The group cannot even be sure if the horses were under the care of someone, or if they were wild horses.
No matter their status, these living beings deserve justice. Sign the petition below to demand local authorities take this troubling case seriously.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Sheriff Black,
“The animals of the community are at risk; the people of the community are at risk.” These words of warning come from the only people seemingly investigating a case of mass animal cruelty. Seven horses were gunned down in Otero County, and none of these animals survived.
Why is Animal Protection New Mexico apparently the only local entity that is posting flyers, offering rewards, or even attempting a cursory investigation into these events? The organization is right. Since animal cruelty is so often a precursor to even more violent acts, the community is at risk. Even in the absence of this fact, cruelty against animals is supposed to be a crime.
Please treat these disturbing acts as such, and open a full and immediate investigation.

Anyone in law enforcement should know that killing people starts with abusing/killing animals! Are you all going to wait until people start getting killed? Killing innocent animals that have no way to protect or defend themselves is, in itself, a very heinous crime. Please do the right thing and investigate this thoroughly, get the perp, go back to the Old West system of justice and shoot HIM to death!! Problem solved!! As an added incentive, what if one of these horses belonged to your daughter/son/family? Would you still not investigate?

Reading the vicious comments is profoundly disturbing.
I suggest that individuals look over the entirety of social and news comment columns, evaluate the admittedly self-selected violent bias of commenters, and consider the community made up of inciters of hate and murder.
I have long been present in wilder places, for a greater proportion of my days and life than nearly all US residents, and thus witnessed evidence of poaching, of native wild canids, numerous felids (finding youngmountain lion bodies with heads chopped off, for example), a number of bears, and many more ungulates in many areas of the US west, either shot and left as carrion, many with center forehead wounds, indicating that they had been shot at night using the blinding lights common on offroad 4×4 vehicles, while others consisted only of numerous heads, most often does, in large garbage bags, dumped sometimes miles from their place of death).
Yet, it is the simian hate I wish to address here.
Demanding that professional law enforcement protect native or feral animals, (and trees hundreds of years old, , in some western areas. Not only clearing for illegal “horticulture”but for sheer chopping down, eliciting evaluation of some resentment and hate quite similar to that evinced in most of the hate-comments above and now everywhere on the internet), is one this, prosocial and in the spirit of functional community; but demanding that retribution in the form of more death be imposed, completely another.
The obvious answer is first to remove guns from private hands, as unrestricted guns were the method through which Euroamerican immigrants overran this continent, and defaunated its mammal, reptile, and bird populations, all in a century when repeating weapons were still rare.
The delusion of invulnerability endowed by both firearms and anonymity, as in internet comment, is the same causal factor in uncivil speech, as it is in murderous use of a gun. These impulsive hate-excusions may not differ as much as those who incite death may imagine or believe.
THe social phenomenon of mobbing and killing or excluding those identified, truly or falsely, as outcasts worthy of death or ostracism/expulsion/banishment, is called in legal language “hue and cry” but such mobbing occurs in other social species.
In our own, we have seen that is leads very quickly and at high rates to individual violence released within the perceived safety of the mob.
Lynching, as of targeted individuals without evidence, is one result. The organized killing of native wild predators, another phenomenon of many human cultures, but most destructively relevant here in North America, where the human imaginary concept of “evil” is leveled at targets through socially arousing others.
The wolf, is one such essential native in New Mexico, subject to such hate and consequent persecution as I see lobbied for in these comments intended to blindly arouse.
The answer to bullets is NOT more bullets, but complete removal of bullets from the use of this particular social primate species. That they hang, maim, exclude, and kill ONE ANOTHER, is relatively unimportant,when compared to the killing of innocents.
And our species has proven that it is incapable of determining even our own motivations.
In New Mexico, we have observed that when the native Wolf was reintroduced, nearly 1/2 of the innocent reintroduced wolves were gunned down in their first year
– WITHOUT any such outrage as claimed in the above comments. a recent year, before the covid pandemic diminished ability of official count, SEVENTEEN wolves were murders, not included those killed through hate-filled ranchers baiting wolves to repeat regulatory offenses in order to get them legally removed or killed.
NO SUCH VIOLENT RESPONSE to perpetrators BY THIS SOCIAL PRIMATE SPECIES OCCURRED AS WE OBSERVE ABOVE IN THE COMMENT COLUMN.

So sign on, as that impulse has validity. But do NOT yourself CHOOSE to act EXACTLY as the murderer with a gun.
While you put a lot of thought into this taking guns away as you well know will never happen. The best you can hope for is these savage inbreds do die as soon as possible!

These cruel killings of horses is a horrendous crime. And this seems to be a very bad situation in that it may be committed by a serial horse/animal killer or a group of serial killers, it is especially important that this perpetrator/s be pursued, caught, and be prosecuted to the extent of the law. The perpetrator/s should also be severely fined,have their guns and bullets taken away, and serve a long sentence of jail time. The perpetrators also should not be allowed near any animals and monitored — Only then will justice be done for these beautiful animals. Sheriff please do your job, and catch and prosecute this/monster or monsters and protect the community you work for and protect these animals!
