End Poaching That is Killing Endangered Sumatran Orangutan

Target: Mr. Siti Nurbaya Bakar, Minister of Environment and Forestry, Republic of Indonesia

Goal: Protect the Sumatran orangutan and its habitat by addressing the issues of deforestation and poaching, and promoting sustainable land use practices in Indonesia.

The Sumatran orangutan is critically endangered, with only an estimated 14,600 individuals left in the wild. Habitat loss and poaching are the major threats to the survival of this iconic species. Deforestation for palm oil plantations, logging, and mining has destroyed much of the orangutan’s natural habitat, while poaching for the pet trade and bushmeat has further depleted their numbers.

To protect the Sumatran orangutan and its habitat, it is essential that immediate action be taken to address the root causes of these threats. This requires a commitment to sustainable land use practices, including the protection and restoration of forests and the development of alternative livelihoods for local communities. Additionally, law enforcement and governance must be strengthened to combat poaching and illegal wildlife trade.

Through sustainable land use practices, law enforcement and governance, and public education and awareness-raising, we can protect the Sumatran orangutan and its habitat. By taking action to protect the Sumatran orangutan and its habitat, we can also protect the rich biodiversity of Indonesia and ensure the long-term wellbeing of its people.

Sign below and demand Mr. Siti Nurbaya Bakar, Minister of Environment and Forestry, Republic of Indonesia, take immediate action and support this critical initiative.
