Goal: Ban bullfighting that causes grotesque injuries and a thousand-plus deaths.
A court acknowledged that bullfighting caused “great suffering” that includes grotesque injuries and infections. The instruments of this suffering include swords, lances, and barbed darts. And the outcomes range from debilitating head and neck trauma to death. In France alone, the country where the aforementioned court is located, about 1,000 bulls are killed every year for sport. But after talking about the suffering and cruelty that defines bullfighting, judges at the court in question declared that local customs carry greater weight than animal cruelty. They ruled against the Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) in a case the animal rights organization brought against a bullfighter for “shocking and barbaric” animal cruelty. Then, to pour salt in the wound of animal welfare advocates everywhere, they ordered the SPA to pay the defendant’s court fees.
This case represents the latest loss in a long battle against French bullfighting. Despite having strong animal cruelty laws for nearly every other class of animal, none of these laws protect vulnerable bulls. In areas where bullfighting has long been practiced, the barbarity of this supposed “entertainment” is exempt from any liability or criminality. The courts will obviously not intervene on behalf of these living beings, so lawmakers must at last take the reins.

Dear Mr. Ferrand,
Stab wounds, burns, gory infections, broken bones: such injuries inflicted on a wide scale would shock the conscience of any caring person. If you heard that such torturous injuries took the lives of over 1,000 living beings every year, would you be outraged? Would the outrage turn to confusion if you discovered such brutal behaviors were permitted by your leaders…by yourself?
No amount of waxing poetic about tradition and custom can hide the fact that this reality is the face of bullfighting in France. The country has some of the strongest animal cruelty laws in the world, and you pride yourselves on civility and empathy. This violent practice defies every assertion you make, and it makes a mockery of French ideals.
Please take the only possible step forward. Abolish a deadly form of entertainment that no longer has a place in a humane society.

France is showing the world just how primitive their culture is by allowing the torture and murder of innocents. Bulls are living beings NOT inanimate objects to be used for human entertainment. There is NO excuse to continue this ancient barbaric custom in the 21st century!
If tourists stopped all together to visit these primitive countries I am sure they would quickly pretend to care about animal rights instead of supposed cultural rites. When there is no other way to solve the problems, usually the economical way is the only way.
When a matador is gored to death by the unfortunate bull he is “fighting” there is usually an outcry, but it’s fine for him to torture the animal!!! Strange, isn’t it?? The more of these cowardly scumbags who DO get gored to death, the better I say…..

In this day of high tech everything there are still those who like so see an animal gored to death. In past centuries I could understand this ignorant form of entertainment but today everyone is so busy on cell phones, playing games on various devices yet this tragic bullfighting still continues. We are no longer limited in entertainment, we are educated, we know right from wrong, so why does this continue. What is wrong with us? Would we want to be the bull? So why’d o this to an innocent animal? It I said the way we treat animals is the way will will treat other humans. I do believe Karma will get you and you will live 10 lives as the tormented animal you caused to suffer. That will hurt!
Any country doing this needs to stop. Mexico is another. I cheer when a bullfighter is killed doing this.
Please tell me how this is a sport? And why is torturing or killing any animal a sport?! Last I checked it is just considered cruelty. And whenever a matador is gored, I feel no empathy for them. The bull is trying to defend himself. If you lose, so be it.
NO animal should EVER be used for “entertainment.” From bullfighting, to riding elephants, to circuses, bears on bikes, monkeys, all of it. It is totally unnecessary. They weren’t put on this planet for disgusting humans to use and abuse. They are beings with feelings and they deserve better. Stop supporting this crap by giving your $$$ to keep this shit going. Bullfighting is NOT a sport. It’s a massacre. A sport is a contest between equally matched opponents. These poor animals never stand a chance because they are half dead before the slaughter even starts. Where is the kindness and compassion in this world?

The bulls are handicapped with vaseline in their eyes, menthol shoved up their noses, and then are mutilated and tortured for some sick show. How low and disgusting can humans get? Those horses have cotton shoved in their ears, vaseline and menthol also, so they won’t shy away from the bulls. Many are gored and die a painful slow death. The entire thing is appalling!
Perfectly and accurately stated. The padding on the horse is just to “protect” the “sensibilities” of the spectators, the horse’s screams are hidden by the horse’s vocal cords ripped out and the padding, hiding the horse’s blood, intestines and gore. The bull’s most serious mortal injuries are hidden, inside the bull’s body! I would like to see the matador and spectators be the “sport”!
