Puppy Abandoned in a Crate on a Sidewalk in Poor Condition Deserves Justice

Target: Lee C. Kindlon, District Attorney of Albany County, New York

Goal: Identify and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law the individual who abandoned a female puppy in a crate on a public sidewalk and walked away, leaving her in poor condition with no food, water, or shelter.

A man left a female puppy locked inside a crate on a public sidewalk in front of a city building and then walked away without looking back, leaving the helpless animal alone and exposed in the darkness. The puppy, now named Ayla, was discovered by a passerby who contacted authorities, potentially saving her life. When Ayla was brought to a local humane society, she was found to be in poor condition — a state that raises serious questions about the circumstances she was subjected to prior to her abandonment. She is now stable and receiving care, but her ordeal should never have happened.

Abandoning a puppy in a crate on a public sidewalk in the predawn hours is not an act of carelessness — it is a deliberate choice to discard a living creature as though she were refuse, with no regard for her suffering, her survival, or her fear. Ayla had no food, no water, no shelter, and no means of escape from the crate in which she was sealed and left behind. Had a passerby not happened upon her and contacted authorities, the outcome could have been devastating. Albany police have released information about the incident and are actively seeking the public’s help in identifying the individual responsible.

Albany County’s District Attorney must be prepared to pursue this case with the full force of New York’s animal cruelty statutes the moment a suspect is identified. The abandonment of an animal in poor condition — sealed in a crate and left on a sidewalk before dawn — represents exactly the kind of cruelty those statutes are designed to address and punish. Ayla deserved protection, not abandonment. Sign this petition to demand that the individual responsible be identified and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear DA Kindlon,

We are writing to urge your office to be prepared to prosecute the individual currently being sought by Albany Police in connection with the abandonment of a female puppy in a crate on a public sidewalk. According to the Albany Police Department, the individual left the puppy — now named Ayla — in a crate on the sidewalk in front of a city building and then walked away. When Ayla was recovered and brought to a local humane society, she was found to be in poor condition, raising serious concerns about the treatment she experienced prior to being abandoned.

Ayla was discovered only because a passerby happened to find her and alert authorities. Had that individual not intervened, the outcome for a puppy sealed in a crate and left alone in the predawn hours could have been fatal. The act of abandoning a vulnerable animal in this manner — in poor health, alone, and with no means of escape — is not a minor infraction. It represents a callous and deliberate disregard for animal life that New York’s animal cruelty laws are specifically designed to address.

We respectfully but firmly demand that your office commit to pursuing the maximum penalties available under New York law once the individual responsible is identified. We also encourage your office to support the Albany Police Department’s ongoing investigation in every way possible. Ayla had no voice and no means of helping herself — it is now the responsibility of the justice system to speak for her.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
