Demand Stricter Penalty for Man Who Allegedly Decapitated Seagull Over French Fries

Target: Jennifer Davenport, Attorney General of New Jersey

Goal: Demand a sentence that reflects the severity of allegedly decapitating a live seagull in public and ensure animal cruelty is treated as the serious crime it is.

A man who allegedly decapitated a seagull on a busy public boardwalk — all because the bird tried to take french fries from his daughter — has walked free from court, receiving what animal rights advocates are calling a shockingly lenient sentence. Rather than facing state prison time for his guilty plea on third-degree animal cruelty charges, the individual was admitted to recovery court and credited with 263 days for time already served. The alleged act of brutal, impulsive violence against a wild bird in a public space has sparked widespread outrage among animal welfare communities.

According to reports, the incident occurred in July 2024 on the North Wildwood boardwalk, when the man became enraged after a seagull attempted to snatch french fries from his daughter. What reportedly followed was a brutal act of violence in which the bird was decapitated. Court records indicate that after killing the seagull, the man approached nearby staff to request a trash bag while still holding the dead bird’s body. He allegedly became irate and uncooperative when officers arrived on an unrelated matter, leading to additional charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Allowing a man who allegedly decapitated a living animal in a fit of rage to avoid meaningful prison time sends a deeply troubling message — that animal cruelty carries little real consequence in the eyes of the justice system. A seagull reportedly lost its life in a moment of violence witnessed in a public space, and the individual responsible has faced minimal accountability. The Attorney General of New Jersey must review this sentence and take action to ensure that animal cruelty convictions result in punishments that genuinely reflect the gravity of the offense.

PETITION LETTER:

AG Davenport ,

We are writing in response to a deeply troubling case in which a man pleaded guilty to third-degree animal cruelty after allegedly decapitating a seagull on a public boardwalk in a fit of rage over the bird attempting to take french fries from his daughter. Despite the guilty plea and the alleged brutal and public nature of this act of cruelty, the individual was admitted to recovery court rather than sentenced to state prison, receiving credit for 263 days already served. Animal rights advocates and members of the public have been understandably outraged by what many are calling a dangerously lenient outcome.

We are gravely concerned that this sentence fails to reflect the seriousness of killing an animal through an act of deliberate and violent rage. The willingness to allegedly decapitate a living creature impulsively and in public — and then request a trash bag to dispose of the remains — speaks to a disturbing disregard for animal life that demands a firm judicial response. Weak sentences in cases like this do not deter future acts of animal cruelty; they embolden them.

We respectfully urge your office to review this case and take all available steps to ensure that animal cruelty convictions in New Jersey carry sentences commensurate with the violence of the alleged acts committed. No animal should lose its life to human rage and have its abuser walk free. We ask that you act to strengthen accountability in animal cruelty cases across the state.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
