Seek Justice for Retired K-9 Dog Partner Allegedly Starved to Death by Former Officer

Target: Stoddard County, Missouri Prosecuting Attorney Sawyer Smith

Goal: Prevent former officer from owning pets or working in law enforcement for allegedly starving dogs.

Derrick Durall, a former officer of the law, will spend 15 days in jail after his retired K-9 partner named Appollo was allegedly found starved to death inside his kennel. It is important that Durall never be allowed to work in law enforcement again and that he also be legally banned from owning pets if these allegations are found to be true, so that other animals will not endure the same fate.

Reports indicate that Appollo’s ribs and vertebrae were showing through his body when he was found. The dog was further said to have pneumonia, which is often a result of suffering from starvation. Another dog named Knox was allegedly found in poor condition and was stated by the vet to have both heartworms and unhealthy teeth. Knox had reportedly lost 10 pounds since his last vet visit, and the animal was said to have a foul smell even after having been washed several times.

Durall was fired after the incident was investigated and is required to pay the department $8,900 as well as serve a 2-year probationary sentence after spending 15 days in jail. Sign this petition and demand the prosecutor also suggest he never be allowed to work in law enforcement or own pets again.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prosecutor Smith,

A former police officer named Derrick Durall was recently charged with starving his two retired police dogs. If these allegations turn out to be true, it is important he no longer be allowed to work as an officer or be able to own future pets so that other animals will not needlessly suffer under his care.

When Appollo’s body was found, his vertebrae and ribs were allegedly protruding through his body. The dog was also thought to have pneumonia before he died, which is often a symptom of malnourishment. Shortly after a dog’s ribs show, the organs shut down and they can no longer support vital functions or filter toxins out of the body. As a result, a starving dog dies a slow and painful death.

Durall’s other dog named Knox was said to be grossly underweight and was allegedly suffering from a bad case of heartworms and extremely worn teeth. Additionally, the dog was further said to still smell after being given 5 baths, an indicator that another medical problem may be present. For these reasons, I demand you suggest that Durall never be allowed to work in law enforcement again or own future pets so that other animals will hopefully not be dealt the same hand.

Sincerely,
