Success: Zoo to Combat Amphibian Endangerment

Target: Damian Goodall, Amphibian Supervisor of the Melbourne Zoo

Goal: Praise a zoo for developing a plan to combat the loss of frog species.

Australia’s near-extinct southern corroboree frog may be restored, thanks to efforts from the Melbourne Zoo. Staff from the zoo have chilled over a thousand eggs to be released into safe, disease-free areas where they will hatch later this spring.

While the corroboree is only one species of frog, it is still a huge step in the right direction. Disease is said to be the number one killer of amphibians overall, with the corroboree being at the top of Australia’s extinction watch list. Petitions such as this one have been circulated demanding the protection and preservation of amphibians. Should this venture be a success, it bodes well for countless other species of amphibian in the future.

This conservation project is welcome news after recent disturbing reports of amphibian endangerment, and it is hoped that the effort will bear fruit. Sign this petition to thank the Melbourne Zoo for their contribution to the effort to save amphibians.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Goodall,

The Melbourne Zoo’s efforts to preserve and restore the corroboree frog species are deeply appreciated, and the news of this plan is most welcome. Amphibians as a whole are in danger of total extinction, with disease being the number one killer. Additionally, the corroboree is among the most endangered of frog species, at the top of Australia’s extinction watch list; this makes it an ideal choice to start with.

It is hoped that this plan will prove successful, and that many more species of amphibian will be preserved and restored in such a way. This is an important step towards saving the population from total extinction, and we thank you for it.

Sincerely,
