Success: Anti-Horse Slaughter Amendment Passed

Target: Chairman Thad Cochran, U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations

Goal: Support the passing of amendments to stop horse slaughter in the U.S. and prevent the export of horses for slaughter in other countries.

Steps are finally being taken to protect U.S. horses from slaughter with the passing of new legislation. Thanks in part to petitions like this one at ForceChange, the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee has introduced and passed amendments to help save these innocent creatures from being slaughtered for human consumption in our country, and from being inhumanely transported to other countries for the same purpose.

The USDA will now be prevented from using tax dollars to inspect facilities that slaughter horses, which effectively shuts those facilities down and prevents new slaughterhouses from opening, for a period of one year. In addition to this amendment, the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act (H.R. 113) has also been introduced to address the problem of the cruel export of horses for slaughter in Mexico and Canada. The SAFE Act will end American export of horses for this purpose, and will also protect citizens from consuming tainted horse meat. Although wild horses still face threats in our country, this legislation is a positive and necessary step toward protecting these animals. Sign below to support these amendments and the protection of U.S. horses from slaughter.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chairman Cochran,

The Senate Appropriations Committee has taken important and necessary steps toward protecting U.S. horses from cruel slaughter and export for human consumption, and I would like to thank you for your role in that. Thank you for passing an amendment to prevent tax dollars from being used for the inspection of horse-slaughter facilities for one year, effectively stopping the process in its tracks.

Additionally, the SAFE Act, which would finish the job by stopping the brutal export of horses to other countries to be slaughtered for their meat, is a vital piece of legislation that must be passed as well. I support these steps toward protecting horses in America and hope the Senate will continue along this path and do all it can to ensure these amendments are enforced.

Sincerely,

This is a great funniest step. Not one of our wild horses should have to die because of mismanagement. There are birth control options and adoption programs. Stop letting ranchers encroach on public lands that supports these horses. Meat consumption is down so we do not need more cattle ranches.

You all have a good heart, but to help these animals, we must all look into the lies created by gov criminals. The burns amendment, to the Wild Horse and Burros Act, is their latest ploy to destroy all protections for our wild equines. This must be retracted due to illegal ratification of this, and maybe, other amendments. One other example is the vaccine, which permanently renders equines infertile after a few injections! The govs’ goal here is to leave only non-reproductive heards roaming, until they get old and die! I believe, the SAFE Act will continue to stagnate in Congress until our wild equines are all gone. The ranchers and kill-buyers are taking advantage of this feeding frenzy and are quickly sending the last remaining equines to slaughter. I also believe that Ranchers made a deal with our gov to make room for more cattle grazing, after securing a beef market to feed billions of hungry Chinese. This sounds more like propaganda to me from what I have just finished reading about almost every single thing that would assist to protect and sustain wildlife, National Parks etc etc has been all but axed by Mr Trump?

  4. Horses are amazing creatures. It’s disgusting how they are slaughtered for their meat.

  5. One year, what??? Why do they deceive us.
