Success: Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides Banned in New York City

Target: Zohran Mamdani, Mayor of New York City

Goal: Support abolishing carriage rides rife with allegations of overworked, abused, and neglected horses.

Tragic deaths involving both people and horses recently renewed outcries against New York City’s controversial horse carriage tourism industry. This ForceChange petition outlined the industry’s troubled past and called for a decisive ban on the controversial practice. With new leadership has finally come welcome change.

Zohran Mamdani, NYC’s recently elected mayor, announced a deal with city council speaker Julie Menin. The deal includes Mamdani’s support for a bill that would prohibit the operation of any horse-drawn carriage within New York City. With this support and the already-confirmed agreement of the majority of council members, the bill was expected to officially become law. And now the New York City Council has made it official. Within two years, an industry rife with decades of animal abuse allegations will be abolished. The mayor has also vowed to aid carriage drivers in securing alternate employment.

Sign the petition below to thank Mayor Mamdani for listening to and acting on the concerns of animal welfare activists.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mayor Mamdani,

“We have been working closely with the City Council, union partners, carriage drivers, animal welfare advocates, and community leaders to deliver a just transition that protects workers while ending horse-drawn carriages in Central Park once and for all.” Your public statement and public support for this ban means a great deal to the individuals who have fought tirelessly for years to end a cruel practice. This important development also honors the animal and human lives lost.

Thank you for backing your words with needed and long-overdue action.

Sincerely,
