Fourteen Animals Reportedly Found in Unfit Home: Pursue Full Prosecution

Target: Dawn Janecke, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor, Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada

Goal: Fully prosecute allegations that 14 animals—including puppies, dogs, cats, a lizard, mouse, and fish—were subjected to unnecessary suffering inside a residence declared unfit for habitation.

Fourteen animals were seized from a Lethbridge residence after Community Animal Services requested police assistance during a property inspection. Officers removed four puppies, three adult dogs, four cats, a lizard, a mouse, and a fish. Police said the animals were not being properly cared for, while conditions inside the residence were serious enough to result in a closure order declaring it unfit for habitation.

Aaron Burke, 22, and Savannah Rayne McClung, 23, were subsequently charged with causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. Authorities allege that the two tenants were responsible for the animals while they were living at the property. Neither defendant has been convicted, and criminal responsibility must be established through admissible evidence and due process.

The variety and number of animals involved make a thorough prosecution especially important. Veterinary findings, photographs of the residence, animal-care records, witness statements, and evidence concerning access to food, water, sanitation, shelter, and veterinary treatment should be carefully examined. If the charges are proven, prosecutors should seek meaningful penalties and appropriate restrictions on future animal possession.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Janecke,

Fourteen animals were removed from a Lethbridge residence after authorities determined they were not receiving proper care. The animals included four puppies, three adult dogs, four cats, a lizard, a mouse, and a fish, and the alleged condition of the residence resulted in an order declaring it unfit for habitation.

Aaron Burke and Savannah Rayne McClung have been charged with causing unnecessary suffering to animals. Please ensure that all veterinary findings, photographs, witness testimony, and other relevant evidence are thoroughly presented as the case proceeds.

If the prosecution proves that these animals were subjected to criminal neglect or unnecessary suffering, pursue convictions and penalties reflecting the harm established in court. Where legally appropriate, seek restrictions preventing anyone convicted from possessing or caring for animals in the future.

Sincerely,
