Seven cages held approximately 2,100 birds during a journey lasting more than thirty-two hours. PETA India alleges that budgerigars, finches, and cockatiels lacked adequate food, water, ventilation, and room to spread their wings. Some birds appeared unconscious or dead when the train reached its destination.
A subsequent pet-shop search recovered 337 birds; PETA reports that twelve later died. Approximately 1,763 remain unaccounted for. The organization also alleges that the consignees initially received the birds despite concerns raised with railway police. A reported claim that other birds had already been sold must be examined through records and witness evidence.
Each untraced bird raises welfare concerns. Investigators should identify recipients, assess surviving animals, and establish responsibility throughout the transport and delivery process.
