The female kitten was only about six weeks old and severely underweight. A small bowl of water and some dry biscuits were inside, but the box offered virtually no protection from passing vehicles, predators, or prolonged exposure to the elements.
The motorists stopped and rushed Pearl to emergency veterinary care. She was later transferred into specialized rescue care, where intensive feeding and close monitoring were required to stabilize her dangerously low body weight. Pearl had no microchip or identification paperwork that could immediately trace her to a previous home or caregiver.
No suspect has been identified. Investigators should pursue available dashcam recordings, nearby surveillance footage, and information from anyone who may have seen a vehicle stopping along the road. Establishing Pearl’s origins could also reveal whether other vulnerable animals need protection.
