Justice for Jameson: Dog Shot Dead During Police Encounter Deserves Accountability

Target: Jim McDonnell, Chief of Los Angeles Police Department

Goal: Seek answers and accountability in officer-involved shooting of pet dog.

A raucous celebration of the New York Knicks took a tragic turn when a young dog was shot dead in the aftermath. Authorities in Los Angeles responded to reports of a woman screaming inside an apartment. The woman soon clarified that she was screaming in joy because her favorite basketball team had just won a championship. Following the woman’s St. Bernard and poodle mix, Jameson (clad in a Knicks jersey) arrival on the scene, the situation quickly escalated.

The officers, seemingly fearful of the approaching dog, ordered the woman to keep her pet inside while they spoke with her in the hallway. Unfortunately, Jameson got through the door during the questioning and reapproached one of the officers. The policeman reportedly fired at Jameson, killing him. After a video circulated online of the woman crying over her fallen pet, vigils and protests ensued. The LAPD has claimed an investigation of the shooting is underway for any potential violations of protocols, but the dog’s family says no apology or explanation has been provided.

Sign the petition below to demand the department reinforce and strengthen its guidelines regarding dog encounters.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chief McDonnell,

“What I saw on the bodycam footage is disturbing and tragic. While the investigation is ongoing, I am very concerned about why shots were fired and Jameson was killed.” Los Angeles’ mayor issued this statement in response to the reported police killing of a family dog.

Department protocols seemingly establish a clear set of alternatives to use on animals before resorting to deadly force. If these protocols were not followed, accountability and – more importantly – education needs to take place. Please ensure every officer receives the training needed so an innocent mistake will not turn into a tragedy that cannot be taken back.

Sincerely,
