Goal: Punish individuals accused of starving over 100 animals to fullest extent if found guilty.
When New Jersey residents Rebeccah Halbach and Brandon Leconey were arrested on multiple charges of animal cruelty as well as child endangerment, community members were horrified. Investigators indicated that the couple may have been responsible for the deaths of as many as 100 dogs and the endangerment of many more animals, including cats and rabbits. The local police chief described their alleged house of horrors as follows: “there’s dogs in cages. Live dogs in cages, dead dogs in cages. Dead animals throughout the house…behind the home there was also a burial spot where there was a large number of dogs in various levels of decay.” A nine-year-old child was also reportedly on the premises, leading to the child endangerment charges. But the sad story does not end here. Halbach and Leconey have now been arrested on even more charges.
According to the new filings, the couple allegedly leveraged their connections to an animal rescue to pose as employees of the shelter and engage in fraudulent adoptions. Worse yet, not only did this apparent scheme reportedly swindle well-meaning people out of money, but it also allegedly led to innocent animals coming under the “care” of the couple. Abuse, neglect, and starvation seemingly followed.

Rebecca Halbach and Brandon Leconey allegedly let dozens of animals starve to death while carrying out a reported fraudulent animal adoption scheme. From the statements of the police chief, the alleged crime scene tragically lived up to its moniker as a house of horrors. The chief said of the case: “what was present in that home was jarring to some pretty senior law enforcement officers, who have seen things, and this will probably stick with them for a while.” These discoveries apparently included several barely alive animals on the brink of death.
Following the additional charges related to the initial animal cruelty and child endangerment charges, please ensure this tragic chapter has a just conclusion. Do not settle out of court, and pursue the maximum possible sentence. The reported victims deserve as much.

If we don’t start seriously punishing these horrific people for their sadistic indifference to animals then we will never stop this unending nightmare for innocent animals in this country. We are not a third world country and should stop acting like one. Animal torture is illegal and we must make sure consequences are quick and great and that all abusers pay for their actions. Jail, fines and a lifetime ban on animal contact for everyone involved.

Judges hands are tied, it’s not Judges fault that politicians from both sides of the aisle continue to ignore the plight and torture of defenseless, domesticated human companion animals that have no say, they are treated no different than buying a used car! It’s absolutely despicable, unconscionable and indefensible for politicians to ignore these poor creatures continuously from puppy mills to dog fighting rings with organizers, participants and spectators/gamblers and just the plain out …hole owners who leave their dogs outside 24 hours with little to no shelter, water, food in every season!!! There needs to be punishment on an equal level as if they were crimes against humanity..stiff penalties of up to 20 years in prison, heavy fines levied of $10,000 per occurrence, forfeiture of property for anyone running a puppy mill, including backyard breeders, and lifetime bans on never be allowed to own an animal again!!! I believe anyone commenting here and anyone with common sense that wants to see this horrific abuse end can agree that there atrocities should be immediately eliminated on a nationwide basis with federal laws and punishments enacted!!! This is insanity and with the morons we’ve all put in office in DC I unfortunately don’t see the insanity stopping anytime soon for our God’s innocent creatures!!!
The judges are not innocent bystanders in this evilness. They never do what they can, never sentence to the fullest extent of the law. Politicians are right in the thick of this injustice system towards animals, I do agree with that. But in order for them to run things, you have to have prosecutors and judges that go right along with them in order to get financial backing or favors or consensual back-washing. They’re all in this broken system together because they all made it together. I pretty much hate all politicians, judges and lawyers/prosecutors. They’re all professional liars.

The only way to get the protection that animals deserve is to keep the officials (judges, DA’s, Animal control) in the public’s eye. Write letters, attend trials, write letters to the news papers reminding others what little is being done. If these judges are elected make this a big issue when they come up for re-election. And, if the police/sheriff are poorly trained in
presenting their evidence get them trained so that they do their job professionally. YOU, the public need to get invested in the lives of these animals. YOU need to be their voice
Theses are dangerous people with psychopathic tendency. They do not belong in polite society. The child is better off being away from theses people forever. If not the child would become just like theses people. They are inhumane humans.
They need to be jailed a long time. Let them have less food so they can get a feeling of what the innocent animal had to contend with.

Animal abuse/cruelty is a FELONY of fines and 7 years in prison. Make them pay for all the expense of care to those that are still living and give them 7 years per victim. That will put them away for the rest of their lives and save innocent animals from them in the future. While in prison, give them the same treatment they gave the innocent animals

I totally agree with Joanne. Punishment needs to be immediate and harsh. This is definitely a horror story and heartbreaking. So many animals needlessly suffering. This behaviour needs to be taken seriously in all cases and stricter laws and appropriate punishment needs to happen.

First of all, the child should be permanently removed from the home immediately. And the adults should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and never allowed NEAR a child or an animal ever again.
