Success: Ban on Wildlife Killing Contests Moves Forward

Target: Deborah Glick, Assembly Member for New York

Goal: Support bid to make hunting contests and competitions unlawful.

Wildlife killing contests have come under intense scrutiny both for their methods and for their very existence. This ForceChange petition called attention to some of the most disturbing aspects of these events that trade in mass slaughter. Now, one prominent state is joining eight others in taking notice and taking action.

A bill introduced and approved by majorities of both New York legislative chambers would prohibit the following: to “organize, sponsor, conduct, promote, or participate in any contest, competition, tournament or derby where the objective of such contest or competition is to take wildlife.” In other words, the types of contests that offer up cash prizes for killing large numbers of coyotes or other wild animals would be illegal under most circumstances. After years of inactivity and after a similar measure was stalled at the federal level, hope was waning. But the relentless advocacy efforts of young New York animal activists as well as the support of passionate advocates like the signers of the aforementioned petition made this breakthrough legislation possible.

Sign the petition below to thank the lawmakers instrumental in moving this important effort closer to passage.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Representative Glick,

Thank you for listening and acting on behalf of Pace University’s Animal Advocacy Clinic and countless numbers of advocates across the nation. Your measure to ban most wildlife killing contests in the state garnered bipartisan support and has a strong chance of becoming law. As a result, conservation efforts for targeted animals can truly take root and flourish.

New York can finally join the eight other states that have become leaders in animal conservation and in ensuring that the voices of communities will not be silenced in favor of special interests.

Sincerely,

  1. Hopefully this action will come to ALL the states. It’s time for ALL Americans to stand up and stop this cruelty. Thank you to ALL who have taken interest and have decided to support our animals and wildlife.

    • You have no idea what you are talking about.
The hunting and taking of coyote is the best method for over population and disease within this species. It also helps keep the balance of all animals as coyotes kill all small game including deer fawns. The coyote is not the game animal the majority of hunters go out for. That is why they are overpopulating and venturing into suburbs and cities. This is a way of helping the DEC study the population and health of this canine
