No More ‘Slaps on the Wrist’ for Animal Abusers

Target: Chuck Schumer, U.S. Senate Majority Leader

Goal: Enhance federal animal welfare standards concerning chronic neglect.

Three dogs in reportedly dire condition are rescued from an Arkansas residence. Upon investigation, a fourth deceased dog is apparently discovered in a trashcan. In Colorado, nine wild mustangs are liberated from what authorities call an “emergency situation.” Both of these troubling cases demonstrate how alleged neglect can devastate a broad swath of animals.

The incidents also call attention to the lack of accountability for this type of animal cruelty. No indication has been given that jail time was assigned in either case. Across the country, similar narratives play out with a startling frequency. At-risk animals are retrieved from a property, sometimes only to be returned to that very same property. The accused offenders are often given legal slaps on the wrist. In many cases, they are not even prohibited from contact with more animals, allowing the vicious cycle to repeat itself time and again.

The Animal Welfare Act sets federal standards for care of some animals. Certain people or groups, however—like private shelters, pounds, and private collectors of animals—are excluded from these minimal guidelines. Sign the petition below to demand federal animal welfare neglect laws cover all vulnerable animals.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator Schumer,

Neglect is an insidious form of abuse, and it takes the most crushing toll on the most vulnerable populations. Unfortunately, too many pets and other animals fall into this category. Cases of neglect are such a sizeable percentage of animal cruelty cases because they go unchecked and unpunished.

The loopholes in the nation’s lynchpin animal welfare law do not help. The Animal Welfare Act is supposed to set an example, but instead it carves out exceptions for a whole host of individuals and entities responsible for the care of animals. As a result, these living beings do not receive adequate protection.

Animal cruelty is a topic that crosses party lines and unites people who otherwise have nothing in common behind an important cause. Please give this country a win by safeguarding its most vulnerable. Strengthen the Animal Welfare Act.

Sincerely,

  1. WE NEED STRICTER LAWS AGAINST ANIMAL ABUSE!!!!~! ANIMAL ABUSE MUST BE STOPPED!!!!!!!

  2. Evan Jane Kriss says:

Animal abuse is a SERIOUS CRIME, and must be dealt with as such. Often, at-risk animals are retrieved from a property, sometimes only to be returned to that very same property. The accused offenders are often given legal slaps on the wrist. In many cases, they are not even prohibited from contact with more animals, allowing the vicious cycle to repeat itself time and again. This must NEVER happen. PROSECUTE all animal abusers to the fullest extent of the law, IMMEDIATELY SEIZE all animals in their possession and BAN them from ever purchasing, owning, caring for, working with or living with any animals ever again. Make them PAY ALL VET BILLS to restore abused animals to full health. NOTHING LESS.

  3. The battles for LAWS PROTECTING ANIMALS were hard fought! HOW DARE PROSECUTORS NOT FULLY ENFORCE THEM???? THIS IS A BLATANT BETRAYAL OF VOTERS AND INNOCENT ANIMALS WHO ARE SUFFERING!!!!

  4. This is ARKANSAS.Nothing to do with Schumer! Laws are not enforced!!!

  5. WHEN THE HELL ARE ANIMAL PROTECTION LAWS GOING TO BE ENFORCED???
WHY ARE WE CONSTANTLY SIGNING PETITIONS WHEN THERE ARE LAWS IN PLACE?????

    • People need to go after LAW ENFORCEMENT. Laws on the books but they need to be arrested first. I remember years ago when i first started cat rescue. Pos threw cat into street like garbage which is illegal. Two witnesses and cops did NOTHING. They knew where this pos lived. We took cat and adopted to lovely woman.

  6. PROSECUTORS: ENFORCE THE DAMN LAWS SO WE AN STOP SIGNING THE SAME PETITIONS DECADE AFTER DECADE!!!!

  7. I have been fighting for this over 15 years only to watch more and more evil abuse. I cannot stand this! Lets make sure all is covered in here. Torture, puppy mills, dogs living outside or in horrible conditions, dog fighting, neglect, cruelty, anything short of being treated like a family member!! Every case needs to be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Once its being done….WE NEED ALOT HARDER AND STRICT LAWS FOR THOSE POS ANIMAL ABUSERS! We need strict charges and our Judges need to put these POS scum bags away for as long as the law allows. Our message needs to say 0 TOLLERANCE for animal abusers! Because now all its saying is “if you want to commit a crime, make it animal cruelty” in my opinion, all they do is ignore this or Offenders get a slap on the hand!!

  8. William Turner says:

Animal abusers are always mentally disturbed

  9. It’s past time to protect animals from abuse. Quit saying you’ll protect animals and actually DO IT !!!
We need people in Washington who are actually gonna do what they say and protect animals from abuse!!!!!!

  10. Colleen Krieger says:

Animal abuse and neglect is an indication of deeper character flaws in a human being. People that feel they can callously harm a defenseless and voiceless animal need to be restricted from animals in all possible ways as well as limited contact with vulnerable people.

  11. In states where you vote for your law enforcement officers and judges vote for the ones with the balls to enforce these laws. In other states keep fighting for what is right to get these laws enforced. This will never end until judges know how people feel about this sh*t.

  12. Lawrence Holtzman says:

These idiots can’t protect us, animals or stay out of the way for all our good. Great idea wrong people to take charge.

  13. Black souls how engage in this behavior are the scumbags of the earth and need to he removed permanently.

  14. Federal animal welfare neglect laws need to cover ALL ANIMALS!!!!!!!!!!

  15. Michelle Mccartney says:

I can’t even believe the stories of animal abuse that I have been reading about every day now. If someone abuses an an animal, a creature that is innocent & at the least, looking to have its basic needs met. Then they should be prosecuted. No Second chances. They are monsters, and should be dealt with accordingly. It makes me sick to think that these amazing beautiful creatures aren’t treated with the kindness and love they deserve. Who are these Neanderthals?

  16. Maria Lavorato says:

    Agree with comments….
No animal abuse should go unpunished. Depending on the severity of the abuse the crime should match.
    NO MORE SLAP ON WRIST!!

THE LAW MUST BE WRITTEN WITH SEVERE CONSEQUENCES AND THEN ENFORCED FOR EVERY CASE!!!!!!! …..IT’S NOT SO IT KEEPS HAPPENING AND THESE SWEET INNOCENT ANIMALS PAY WITH AGONY!! TURN IT AROUND NOW LAWMAKERS!!! DO YOUR JOB!

  17. It’s terrible what animal abusers are allowed to get away with and suffer little or no consequences. What kind of country are we any way! We need harsh penalties and no more slap on the wrist for these low life jerks!

  18. Monica+Lee+Koski says:

I know everyone is frustrated, heartbroken, and sickened by reading about the growing number of cruel animal abuse and neglect cases that seem to get worse all of the time! I know I am!!! Then to make it even worse yet, so many reports of neglect and abuse go both unchecked and unpunished! We all must do better for all of the innocent, suffering animals, by strengthening the Animal Welfare Act and crack down on all instances of animal abuse and neglect, and hold all those responsible accountable, with punishments that actually fit the crimes!

  19. Several posters on here said to post pictures of animal torturers and abusers on Facebook and shame them. Now, that’s a real joke. There is no way in hell that you can shame a mother-fuckers that abuse animals. If they saw their pictures on Facebook, they would just laugh about it. The answer for these bastards is just shoot the mother-fuckers in the head and lay them out in a field naked and let the buzzards pick their worthless asses clean. Then, take their skeletons and run them up a flagpole with a sign around their necks saying that “this is what is going to happen to any worthless mother-fucker that hurts or kills any animal”. Problem solved. No more dogs will suffer under these worthless bastard’s so-called care. But getting this implemented would be like an ant picking up an elephant. Too many bleeding-hearts out there that would scream their lungs out wanting the person that eliminated these bastard to get the death penalty. Yet they come on here talking how they should get jail time, a big fine and never to own animals again. This shit hasn’t worked in the past and will not work in the future. The only thing that low-life bastards that hurt animals understand is extreme pain or fear running thru their minds right before a man with a gun pointed at their heads pulls the trigger and blows their brains out. Which is exactly what these animal abusers deserve. Don’t wait for the law to do shit because they won’t. It’s been proven too many times in the past.

  20. Sandy Menden says:

Animal abusers should be given the death penalty!
