Applaud Rent the Runway for Eliminating Fur Products from Inventory

Target: Jennifer Hyman, CEO of Rent the Runway

Goal: Applaud Rent the Runway for eliminating fur from its inventory.

Rent the Runway will no longer carry animal fur products. Though Rent the Runway does not create fashion pieces of its own, the decision not to rent animal fur products is still an influential and major step for animal rights.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) spearheaded a yearlong campaign to convince Rent the Runway to stop carrying apparel that has fur, and they have been successful. The campaign involved about 150,000 PETA supporters flooding Rent the Runway with emails, phone calls, social media posts, and paper letters urging the company to stop carrying items that carried mink, rabbit, fox, and other animal skins.

Rent the Runway announced their decision to move away from fur products as early as May 2017, according to Sara Britt, a corporate liaison for PETA. As of February 28, 2018, Rent the Runway purged its final piece of fur from its rentable collection of designer clothes and accessories. Anne Brainard, PETA’s director of corporate affairs, said of Rent the Runway’s decision, “PETA encourages retailers everywhere to join this compassionate company and refuse to stock or sell coats, collars, and cuffs made from tormented animals.” Sign this petition to applaud Rent the Runway in their decision to move away from products that have animal fur.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Hyman,

Rent the Runway has always been a company that has pushed boundaries in the fashion world. Your company has made designer fashion more sustainable simply as a result of your business model that allows the clothing to be rented as opposed to purchased. You have recently taken steps to making your brand even more environmentally friendly. By removing all products that have animal fur, you have chosen to be compassionate towards animals and promote fashion that does not harm other living creatures.

Furthermore, your decision to move away from fur products was partially a result of a PETA campaign that kept animal rights activists in contact with your company via email, phone calls, social media posts, and paper mail. This response to public demand for removal of fur products from your inventory shows that your company is not only listening to the wants of your customer base but also responding to them. I applaud you for your decision to remove products with mink, rabbit, fox, and other animal skins, and I hope that you continue to make compassionate choices.

Sincerely,
