Success: Sea Turtles Pulled Back from the Brink of Extinction

Target: Jim Kurth, Director of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service

Goal: Praise government for helping to save sea turtles and encourage their continued protection.

The previously near-extinct sea turtle is slowly making a comeback thanks to new fishing laws and designated nesting areas made possible by the United States and Mexican governments. For years, these creatures were under constant attack from plastic pollution, climate change, fishing nets, and general habitat loss; at one point, their disappearance seemed almost certain. Now, though, their numbers are slowly but surely increasing.

This is a wonderful and most welcome discovery during a time where wildlife and the environment are in particularly dire straits. Sea turtles have lived on this planet practically since the dawn of time; they are one of our most beloved and valued species, and we came much too close to losing them. Many efforts, such as this petition on ForceChange, have been made and are still being made to stop the decline of the species.

However, these increased numbers do not mean the species is safe; they are still critcally endangered, and we must encourage the governments to continue their efforts. Sign this petition to thank our government and implore them to help keep this trend going.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Kurth,

Your efforts to help save sea turtles from the brink of extinction are commendable; thanks to new fishing laws and designated nesting areas, the species has had a chance to replenish its numbers. However, they are still “critically endangered” according to the studies done. Sea turtles are one of the planet’s oldest and most beloved species, and we came much too close to losing them.

Your efforts have afforded them a good start, and you must endeavor to keep their numbers growing. Please continue your protections and encourage other governments to do the same. Continue the fishing laws, outlaw plastic pollution, and help curb climate change. The sea turtle deserves to live on much longer, and you must aid us in helping to achieve that.

Sincerely,

Japan has been using the “research” excuse for years. If they haven’t gotten the data by now then they never will. SICK.
