Success: Orangutans Gain More Protections

Target: Joko Widodo, Indonesian President

Goal: Praise the increased protection of the Orangutan.

The orangutan has long been struggling to find a safe place in this world. Habitat loss, poaching, and wildlife trafficking have dropped the orangutans’ numbers at a rapid pace. While these beautiful primates may not be out of the fire yet, they have just been given a good lead in the race against extinction. Thanks to countless petitions to save this species, like this ForceChange petition, Indonesia has increased the effort to preserve the orangutans.

The Leuser ecosystem is home to many orangutans, in addition to rhinos and tigers. This area has long been destroyed by mining and deforestation. Thankfully, the government of Aceh Province and the Indonesian president have placed a moratorium on new land clearing and mining. In addition to this moratorium, the granting of new palm oil permits has been halted in other parts of Indonesia. While this may not prevent current palm oil companies from expanding, it does put a stop to the consistent increase in palm oil permits. This is a great step forward in the preservation of the orangutan.

Please sign this petition to praise the Indonesian president for his hard work in the conservation of the orangutan and urge him to continue fighting for this unique primate.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Joko Widodo,

Orangutans have been racing extinction for many years. Due to habitat loss, poaching and wildlife trafficking, these gentle giants have been pushed to the brink of extinction. With your dedication, these primates have been given a second chance. By halting the acceptance of new palm oil permits and placing a moratorium on the Leuser ecosystem, you have given orangutans a helping hand in their continued survival.

Palm oil companies will no longer be able to continuously destroy the orangutans’ precious habitat. Your dedication to the preservation of this species is truly appreciated. Conservationists consider this a huge step forward for the orangutans. Please continue to fight for these primates with whom we have so much in common. Conservationists are looking to Indonesia to continue to lead the fight in the conservation of this species.

Sincerely,
