Tigers Allegedly Confined With Rotting Carcasses: Pursue Prosecution

Target: Rachel Makhari-Sekhaolelo, Director of Public Prosecutions, North West Division, South Africa

Goal: Pursue supported cruelty charges over allegations of tigers confined amid rotting carcasses and a serval’s untreated leg wound, seeking substantial penalties upon conviction.

Rotting chicken remains, scattered bones, and accumulated feces allegedly surrounded captive tigers. A third tiger reportedly limped severely without documented veterinary care, while a serval allegedly had a large untreated wound on its right hind leg.

The NSPCA removed three Bengal tigers and one serval under warrant. Inspectors also allege inadequate drinking water and nonfunctioning meat refrigeration. A cruelty case has been opened, and veterinary assessment and care are continuing at a place of safety.

Removal must be followed by a careful determination of responsibility. The animals’ condition, their feeding arrangements, and the duration of any alleged deprivation require examination. Demand timely review of the evidence, prosecution of supported offenses, and penalties that reflect any suffering established in court.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Makhari-Sekhaolelo,

The alleged confinement of tigers among decomposing food and feces together with a serval’s untreated wound, demands a clear account of who was responsible for care. Assess each animal’s medical findings individually.

Work with investigators to preserve inspection records, photographs, veterinary opinions, and relevant feeding and treatment records. Establish whether the alleged injuries required care that was unlawfully withheld. Examine the reported lack of functioning cold storage and the condition of meat supplied to the predators. Where evidence reveals further welfare risks, refer those findings to the responsible enforcement and permitting authorities while supporting lawful protective arrangements for the animals.

If the evidence establishes offenses, pursue prosecution and seek substantial, proportionate penalties upon conviction, together with any authorized restrictions that protect animals from recurrence. Resolve evidentiary gaps promptly. A legally sound outcome should recognize proven suffering, address responsibility, and sustain the animals’ access to appropriate care. We urge your office to carry this matter beyond rescue and toward meaningful accountability wherever the allegations are substantiated.

Sincerely,
