Target: Javed Alam Odho, Inspector General of Police, Sindh Police, Karachi, Pakistan
Goal: Find and prosecute the cart operator who allegedly beat an emaciated donkey after it collapsed with a fractured leg and abandoned the helpless animal when it could no longer stand.
For an elderly working donkey, collapse should have meant the end of labor. Instead, it allegedly brought another beating. Animal welfare inspectors say they found the donkey crumpled on gravel in an unpaved alley, unable to rise. The animal appeared severely emaciated, with massive open friction sores caused by an ill-fitting wooden cart harness. Most distressingly, the donkey reportedly had a badly fractured hind leg that had been left untreated. Witnesses told authorities that its handler repeatedly beat the collapsed animal in an apparent attempt to force it back onto its feet.
When the donkey remained incapable of standing, the cart operator allegedly unhitched it and abandoned it in the alley. Rescue workers later administered emergency pain relief before carefully lifting the animal into a specialized sling vehicle for transport to a sanctuary. Police have identified the suspected handler and are searching his known commercial routes to execute an arrest warrant. He has not been convicted, and the allegations remain subject to judicial determination.
Working animals cannot choose lighter loads, demand veterinary treatment, or walk away from an abusive situation. If evidence establishes that this donkey was worked while seriously injured, beaten after collapsing, and discarded when no longer useful, authorities should pursue penalties proportionate to that suffering. The suspect must be located and the case brought before the courts.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear IGP Odho,
The treatment of an elderly working donkey beaten and abandoned by the animal’s handler deserves urgent legal attention. Witnesses described an exhausted animal with a severely fractured leg being beaten after collapsing, then allegedly abandoned when it could no longer continue pulling a commercial cart.
Police have identified the suspected operator and issued an arrest warrant. Every reasonable effort should now be made to locate him while investigators preserve veterinary findings, witness testimony, and other evidence concerning the donkey’s condition and treatment.
Please ensure that, if the evidence supports the allegations, the individual responsible is apprehended and prosecuted under all applicable animal protection provisions. A working animal driven beyond physical collapse, beaten and then discarded, deserves meaningful justice.
Sincerely,
