Ducklings Allegedly Crushed Intentionally With Vehicle: Demand Maximum Punishment

Target: Melissa Nelson, State Attorney, Fourth Judicial Circuit, Florida

Goal: Pursue maximum penalties against the individual accused of intentionally killing a brood of ducklings with a vehicle.

A deeply disturbing animal cruelty investigation intensified after surveillance footage apparently showed a driver deliberately steering a vehicle toward a mother duck and her eleven ducklings in Jacksonville, Florida. Witnesses alleged the driver circled back multiple times in a manner that ensured the ducklings were crushed beneath the tires while the surviving mother duck watched nearby.

Community members who attempted to intervene stated the driver dismissed the deaths and referred to the birds as a nuisance. Authorities arrested Beverly Sasberry on charges of aggravated animal cruelty, a felony offense under Florida law. Prosecutors are currently reviewing whether the case may qualify for additional penalties under Dexter’s Law, which could place the defendant on Florida’s animal abuser registry.

Animal advocacy groups have organized demonstrations outside the courthouse demanding the strongest possible punishment if the allegations are proven in court. Wildlife rescuers continue monitoring the surviving mother duck following the deaths of her entire brood.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear State Attorney Nelson,

Authorities have reported that a driver intentionally steered a vehicle toward a brood of ducklings and repeatedly circled back to crush the animals beneath the tires. Surveillance footage and witness statements form the basis of the criminal case.

The reported conduct has shocked community members and animal advocates because of the apparent deliberate nature of the killings. If proven, the alleged acts would represent extreme cruelty toward defenseless wildlife.

We urge your office to pursue the maximum penalties available under Florida law and seek placement on the state animal abuser registry if applicable.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
