Stop Cruelly Slaughtering Horses for Their Meat

Target: Lorenzo Fontana, President of Italy’s Chamber of Deputies

Goal: Back bill that would prohibit slaughter of equine animals for consumption.

As the world has evolved and animal cruelty concerns have come to the forefront, so have once-traditional cuisines. Italy is no exception. While the consumption of horse meat was once a staple across the nation, recent surveying suggests that over 80 percent of the Italian population does not eat any horse meat. The sliding numbers correlate with an uptick in concern about exploitation and slaughter of the animals.

A proposed new law would codify these concerns. Under the draft, equine animals – including mules, donkeys, and horses – would be classified as pets. As such, their slaughter and sale of meat would be criminalized. Significant fines and jail sentences would follow for individuals convicted of the offense.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Fontana,

“We’re in the 21st century and yet equines continue to be exploited in a wide variety of ways.” This statement is the heart of Michela Vittoria Brambilla’s proposed effort to ban the slaughter of horses and the consumption of their meat. Horses are indeed among the most exploited and abused animals on the planet, and any action taken to end their suffering should be welcomed.

This proposal has drawn strong support from political parties with differing philosophies who have come together to say ‘no more’ to unchecked cruelty. More importantly, this measure has the support of a public that has increasingly shunned and condemned horse meat consumption. Please take advantage of this unifying cause and pass a law that could save equine lives.

Sincerely,
