Stop Shooting Pregnant Hares and Leaving Their Orphaned Young to Starve

Target: Mary Creagh, UK Nature Minister

Goal: Ban the shooting of pregnant brown hares and their young during the breeding season.

The inhumane practice of shooting brown hares during their breeding season, which leaves pregnant females to bleed out and orphaned leverets to suffer and starve, is both shocking and unacceptable. Approximately 200,000 hares are killed each year, fostering a devastating impact on their population and wellbeing. This situation demands urgent attention and appropriate punitive measures for those allegedly conducting such activities.

Currently, laws allow for the shooting of hares during months crucial to their reproduction, resulting in widespread suffering among these cherished animals. Furthermore, claims of hare overpopulation have been debunked, revealing a 80% decline in brown hare numbers over the past century. Such evidence signifies a need for not just sound regulations, but also the implementation of strict consequences for those who flout them.

A proposed animal welfare package seeks to change existing laws to provide a close season for hares from February to October, thereby protecting them during their reproductive period. It is essential to ensure stringent penalties are enacted to deter anyone from participating in these brutal practices. As such, appropriate actions must be taken against those reportedly involved in the unnecessary killing of these essential animals, safeguarding their future.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Creagh,

The laws currently permitting the shooting of brown hares during their breeding season expose not only a significant animal welfare issue but also the need for immediate and decisive action to protect vulnerable wildlife. Reports indicate that many pregnant hares are left to bleed out while their leverets are orphaned, leading to prolonged suffering and starvation. With annual figures suggesting that 200,000 hares are killed in commercial shoots, it is imperative to address this pressing issue with urgency.

In light of the shocking statistics that point to an 80% decline in brown hare populations over the last century, it is clear that deeper systemic protections are required. The demand for a close season on hare shooting is long overdue, yet the enforcement of such regulations must be accompanied by severe penalties for those who continue with these brutal practices. The moral and ethical duty to protect these iconic British animals must be fulfilled.

Therefore, we respectfully demand that appropriate legal consequences be imposed on individuals and organizations involved in the shooting of pregnant hares and their young during their critical breeding period. Such measures are necessary to ensure that the decline of this beloved species is halted, reinforcing a commitment to animal welfare in our society.

Sincerely,
