Safeguard Animals From Unlicensed Pet Care Providers

Target: Wilton Simpson, Commissioner of Florida Department of Agriculture

Goal: Strengthen licensing and certification requirements for employees involved in pet care.

Florida deputies rescued six dogs from a residence reportedly covered with garbage and excrement. A brother and sister were subsequently charged with animal cruelty. As if these circumstances were not bad enough, a child was also apparently taken from the residence. In addition, one of the suspects works as a dog groomer.

This person who allegedly mistreated multiple dogs could once more be entrusted with animals because of Florida’s lacking standards. In the state, an individual is not required to have any certification or licensure in order to pursue this profession. Licensure is important because it validates that the person has learned the proper and safe techniques for handling and grooming beloved pets. Licensure also ensures that the groomer knows the unique standards that may be associated with different breeds.

Sign the petition below to urge the state to fix this dangerous lapse in its animal welfare regulations.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Commissioner Simpson,

In far too many instances, people that pet parents entrust with their cherished pets inflict harm upon these animals. Such a case allegedly arose in Citrus County, where two siblings stand accused of neglecting and endangering half a dozen dogs. One of the accused is employed as a dog groomer.

Strict requirements for licensing and certification in this and other pet care-related professions could curtail these unfortunate and preventable incidents. Please enact mandatory standards that will protect pets from needless suffering.

Sincerely,

  1. I, for one do not trust groomers and trainers. Humans are mostly impatient and when it comes to handling a difficult pet, they will do the unthinkable…do not give them an excuse to harm your babies. Also, please speak up if you notice any signs of abuse and report them to the relevant authorities immediately to protect innocent animals even if they arent your pets!
