Horse Allegedly Suffering From Untreated Wounds Deserves Justice

Target: Dr. O.P Chaudhary, Chairman of Animal Welfare Board of India

Goal: Implement stricter regulations to prevent the alleged mistreatment of horses in Kolkata.

The distressing situation of a horse in India’s Kolkata has surfaced after a report filed by Cape Foundation pointed to serious concerns about alleged animal cruelty. The equine was utilized for hauling Victorian-style carriages and weddings, where it reportedly suffered from untreated wounds, swollen limbs, and severe weakness. Allegedly, these alarming signs of mistreatment highlight the need for immediate attention and action to protect these noble animals.

Further examination by equine specialists suggested that the alleged wounds were likely caused by synthetic saddles that did not fit properly, and the severe injuries on the animal’s legs were due to being forced to work on hard roads. This account paints a grim picture of these animals’ conditions, urging a call for a comprehensive reassessment of animal welfare practices in the city. The Maidan Police’s collaboration in the rescue operation underscores the urgency and significance of addressing this issue.

As noted by PETA India, the ongoing use of horse-drawn carriages in Kolkata not only puts animals at risk but also poses safety hazards. Inspired by successful alternatives in other regions, such as the use of heritage-style electric vehicles in Mumbai, a viable, cruelty-free solution exists. Adopt similar innovations that ensure the welfare of animals and the safety of the public.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chairman Chaudhary,

The troubling case of a horse in Kolkata, which allegedly suffered severe mistreatment while being used for commercial hauling, compels us to seek your immediate intervention. Allegedly, this horse displayed signs of physical abuse, including untreated wounds and swollen limbs, indicative of broader systemic issues that need addressing. We must establish stricter regulations and oversight to ensure no other animal suffers similarly.

Equine specialists have assessed the horse’s alleged injuries as resulting from inappropriate equipment and the demanding conditions imposed by their labor on hard roads. This scenario not only harms the animals but also tarnishes the image of Kolkata as a compassionate city towards animals. By following examples set by other cities that have transitioned to more humane alternatives, we believe Kolkata can lead by example in animal welfare.

We, therefore, urge you to take decisive action by implementing stricter regulations on the use of animals in commercial activities and considering sustainable and cruelty-free alternatives like those implemented in Mumbai. The welfare of these animals and the integrity of our city’s treatment of them must be a priority. We count on your leadership to make the necessary changes and uphold the highest animal welfare standards.

Sincerely,

  1. The sickos that treat the horses in this manner need to be subjected to the same treatment

  2. I agree that horses treated like this should have those to did such damage be treated the same. They should be made to suffer! Humans are the filth of this earth. Animals are so far above us in the way they treat others and the manner in which they forgive. I am beginning to think there is no hope for the human race. In India there are so many people. Between India and China there is no land for animals as all land is required for people and you are still reproducing like rabbits! STOP! This earth can not simply support you and China that 3 and a half billion people today and tomorrow it will be 4 billion. India and China must simply control their amount of people. By 2050 there will be 9 billion people. The earth an only support 4 billion.

  3. What else have we come to expect from India?
