The bison of Yellowstone National Park have been granted a stay of execution by officials as experts explore alternative options to mass slaughter. Previously, thousands of bison were culled by hunters and agencies in an attempt to prevent the unlikely transmission of a bacterial infection between the species and local cattle. This is a victory for conservationists those who signed this ForceChange petition. Thank those who fought for this success.
A lawsuit challenging the culling of Yellowstone’s bison has resulted in the reevaluation of management methods. With the help of the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service, the park plans to expand the land area where the animals are permitted to roam. Recent studies have shown that brucellosis, a bacterial infection that causes miscarriage in cattle, is not being transmitted by bison, though this has previously been cited as major reason for the culling. More than 800 of the 4,800 bison residing in the park were killed over the winter. If this new plan is successful, then no more will have to die.
The mass slaughter of bison nearly drove them to extinction at one time. Now, thanks to these advocates, the species may be saved from the repetition of this fate. Sign below and thank those who fought for this victory.
