Success: Critically Endangered Red Wolf Protected

Target: Sierra Weaver, senior attorney, Southern Environmental Law Center

Goal: Support the ruling to protect the endangered red wolf in North Carolina.

The critically endangered red wolf was set to become threatened even further as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) planned to roll back its protections. The rollback of protections would have allowed the USFWS, as well as private landowners, to capture and kill red wolves if they leave a newly restricted area of land. These controversial plans elicited nearly unanimous opposition from the public, including this petition at ForceChange. Thankfully, a federal judge ruled that the drastic USFWS reduction in protections for the wolves violated both the Endangered Species Act and the National Environmental Policy Act.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Weaver,

Thank you for taking action to protect wild red wolves in North Carolina from the irresponsible rollback of protections that the USFWS intended to impose. The plans to severely restrict the wolves’ habitat and allow them to be killed if they leave those areas were dangerous and could have caused the extinction of this iconic species.

The court ruling that these plans violate the Endangered Species Act and the National Environmental Policy Act was a just and responsible one, and would not have happened without your efforts. I support the protection and preservation of wild red wolves in North Carolina.

Sincerely,
