Sobeys: Stop Sourcing Eggs From Hens Confined to Battery Cages

Target: Pierre St-Laurent, President and CEO of Sobeys Inc.

Goal: End the suffering of egg-laying hens by committing to a clear timeline for eliminating cage confinement in egg production.

The suffering of millions of egg-laying hens in Canada is a pressing issue that demands immediate action. Sobeys Inc., despite committing to end the sourcing of cruel caged eggs by 2025, allegedly continues to rely on inhumane practices, with approximately 80 percent of its eggs still sourced from hens confined in battery and enriched cages. These confinement systems not only prevent hens from engaging in their natural behaviors but also severely compromise their well-being as they are forced to live in spaces as small as a sheet of letter-sized paper, unable to even flap their wings.

The term “enriched cage colony housing” is misleading, as it disguises the ongoing cruel treatment of hens. Observations highlight that these hens are deprived of essential activities like foraging, perching, or dust-bathing, leading to distress and suffering. The global shift away from cage confinement makes Canada’s ongoing investment in such practices particularly troubling, suggesting an unwillingness to evolve towards more humane treatment of farmed animals.

The need for change is critical, and the demand for accountability from Sobeys is urgent. A clear, time-bound plan to eliminate cages from its egg supply chain is not just a basic expectation from consumers; it is a moral obligation. By failing to take decisive action on its previous promises, Sobeys is complicit in the continued suffering of countless hens. This petition demands immediate recognition and action from Sobeys to fulfill its commitment, ensuring a cruelty-free future for egg-laying hens.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. St-Laurent,

The treatment of egg-laying hens within your supply chain is an issue of national concern that has reached a critical tipping point. Allegedly, despite your company’s commitment to transitioning away from cage-based egg sourcing by 2025, Sobeys continues to source around 80 percent of its eggs from caged hens. This apparent blatant disregard for your promise to enhance animal welfare is both disappointing and unacceptable. The confinement of these hens in tiny cages, where they are unable to perform natural behaviors, reflects a failing standard of compassion and responsibility.

We urge you to act decisively by releasing a clear and detailed plan with a timeline that commits to the elimination of cage confinement in your egg supply chain. The public is prepared to support businesses that prioritize ethical treatment of animals, but that support will hinge on your willingness to take necessary action. Please honor your commitment and ensure a cruelty-free future for the hens suffering under current practices.

Sincerely,
