Demand Accountability for Alleged Torture of Animals in Inhumane Experiments at UMass Chan Medical School

Target: Michael F. Collins, Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School

Goal: Hold researcher accountable for the alleged torture and inhumane treatment of animals in harmful experiments.

Animals at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School (UMass Chan) have reportedly endured grotesque suffering at the hands of experimenter Raffi Aroian, who allegedly infects hamsters, mice, and rats with blood-sucking parasites, subjecting them to prolonged pain and eventual death. Aroian purportedly reuses these parasites on other animals after harvesting them from the decaying bodies of the prior subjects, extending the cycle of torment far beyond any justifiable scientific inquiry.

Reports indicate that Aroian’s experiments not only incapacitate the animals but do so in a manner that blatantly disregards their well-being. His methods involve suppressing the animals’ immune systems and watching them as the parasites infest their bodies. Hamsters are reportedly kept in solitary confinement in violation of protocols, and there have been instances of them going without water for hours, escalating the neglect and cruelty within his laboratory. The federal government has taken notice of these blatant infractions, citing UMass Chan for compliance failures due to Aroian’s methods.

The alleged continuation of such practices under Aroian’s oversight raises grave ethical concerns about animal welfare and the scientific validity of his research. The demand is simple: an immediate inquiry into Aroian’s practices, appropriate accountability for the alleged abuses, and a directive to replace these inhumane methods with humane alternatives that respect animal life. The time for change is now, before more animals fall victim to this alleged cycle of cruelty.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Dr. Collins,

I write to urge immediate action regarding Raffi Aroian, who stands accused of appalling treatment of animals at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. It has been reported that Aroian subjects hamsters, mice, and rats to agonizing experiments where he infects them with harmful parasites, intentionally suppressing their immune systems, thus prolonging their inevitable suffering before ultimately killing them. The reported neglect in his lab, which included hamsters being deprived of water for extended periods, cannot be overlooked.

The human and ethical implications of Aroian’s alleged practices must not go unaddressed. The reported conditions in which these animals are kept violate not only humane treatment guidelines but also ethical standards of scientific research. The neglect allegedly showcased in Aroian’s lab, including solitary confinement and lack of basic care for the animals, is unacceptable.

It is imperative that UMass Chan investigates these allegations thoroughly and takes appropriate action against Aroian for his unrelenting cruelty to these vulnerable beings. A clear message must be sent that inhumane treatment of animals will not be tolerated within the scientific community. We demand accountability and a switch to ethically responsible, humane research methods that prioritize the welfare of animals.

Sincerely,
