Success: Traumatized Pups Get Second Chances

Target: Brandon Gurley, Chief of Brookhaven Police Department

Goal: Support commitment to saving animals from potentially abusive situations.

In a season that celebrates love, a pair of heartwarming cases showcase the love for animals that drives so many acts of compassion and kindness. In Connecticut, a dog named Melia had been housed at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter since being abandoned nearly three years ago. The pit bull mix had gone through several homes without finding her forever home. When a good Samaritan from Paws Path to Furever rescue heard of Melia’s struggles, the resilient dog received a new chance at a canine rehabilitation facility. As a result, Melia’s 900-day-and-counting odyssey for a forever home finally has real hope of coming to a rewarding end.

And in a case recently documented in this ForceChange petition, a dog who was allegedly abused during a Twitch livestream found salvation with the officers who rescued the small pup from a reportedly dangerous environment. The prompt actions of these officers garnered the attention of PETA. The animal rights organization rewarded the Brookhaven Police Department with its Compassionate Police Department Award.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chief Gurley,

The Brookhaven Police Department recently received PETA’s Compassionate Police Department Award in recognition of its swift and decisive actions during a case involving a Twitch streamer and her three-month-old puppy. The organization’s founder said of the distinction, “PETA is grateful to the Brookhaven Police Department for enforcing the state’s anti-cruelty law and reminds everyone never to be silent if they see or suspect abuse, as one phone call can make all the difference in a vulnerable being’s life.” Thank you for making a difference in the life of one young innocent.

Your example shines during a time when people most need stories of inspiration and hope.

Sincerely,
