Success: Animal Survivors Get New ‘Leash’ on Life

Target: Gary Miller, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Deputy

Goal: Support safe haven and rehabilitation for animals impacted by trauma.

Arizona’s capital city has seen quite a few disturbing animal cruelty cases, as highlighted by this ForceChange petition and this petition. Promising reforms, however, have demonstrated Phoenix is committed to reversing its animal welfare record. Some of the most inspiring success stories come from the city’s Maricopa Animal Safe Haven (MASH) unit.

This program has transformed a former jail into a full-service rehabilitation facility for abused and neglected animals. In the process, it has transformed lives, both animal and human. When animals are rescued in the community, they are brought to the facility, where they benefit from both physical and emotional healing. Inmates who have been rigorously vetted work with the animals to build bonds of trust and to help prepare able animals for adoption. While common pets like cats and dogs are prevalent at the facility, the type of animals passing through are as diverse as their stories of recovery: birds, reptiles, monkeys, horses, and cattle, to name a few.

Sign the petition below to commend the law enforcement leaders who are helping change lives for the better.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Deputy Miller,

Phoenix’s MASH unit truly puts the “rescue” in rescue facility. This organization has helped countless abused and neglected animals through each and every step of their road to recovery. Inmates have embarked on their own journeys of rehabilitation and have benefited just as much – if not more – than the animals with whom they bond.

Thank you for this priceless community service. May it be a template for animal welfare and inmate rehabilitation standards across Arizona and across the nation.

Sincerely,
