Beef Up Animal Protection Services to Prevent Needless Deaths

Target: Chris Coursey, Chair of Sonoma County Board of Supervisors

Goal: Address reported deadly deficiencies at county’s animal services department.

A couple who made money caring for animals was charged with severe neglect of these animals, which included dozens of sheep, birds, dogs, as well as a couple of horses and llamas. Despite these serious charges, the couple – who owned a ranch and one of whom had certification in dog training – was offered a deal wherein the charges against them were dismissed. Worse yet, they could still maintain ownership of at least four dogs and a cat.

It’s not the first time the region where these alleged incidents took place – Sonoma County, California – has faced scrutiny for lacking animal welfare standards. Golden Gate Fields, a horse racing facility in the area, had reportedly become the deadliest such facility in the entire state following serious allegations of neglect and abuse inflicted on horses at the center. One troubling encounter was apparently witnessed by an onlooker, who reported seeing a dog attack and kill a horse on-site.

Critics lay the blame for these alleged oversights on a deeply understaffed and depleted animal services department. Frequent complaints have reportedly gone unanswered. And the supposed 10-person staff of officers rests at just three.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chair Coursey,

At-risk animals are falling through the gaps of a reportedly deficient and ineffective staff at Sonoma County Animal Services. Recent troubling incidents involving serious allegations of neglect against dozens of defenseless animals have seemingly gone unanswered. These living beings are apparently suffering and dying as a consequence.

Please listen to and act on the concerns of advocates who want a fully staffed and operational animal control department that can and will safeguard the region’s most vulnerable inhabitants.

Sincerely,
