Dog Apparently Beaten, Shot, and Left to Die Deserves Justice

Target: Scott Nicholson, County Attorney for Jasper County, Iowa

Goal: Secure the maximum jail time, fines, and a lifetime animal-ownership ban for the individuals who allegedly bludgeoned and shot a dog to death.

A horrifying act of cruelty was reportedly uncovered in Kellogg when witnesses told deputies they heard a gunshot and saw a dog being viciously beaten. Responding officers allegedly found the animal with severe head trauma; veterinary x-rays later purportedly revealed a bullet lodged in the skull. Despite emergency care, the dog succumbed to its injuries.

Authorities say a search of the residence uncovered a firearm along with drugs and drug paraphernalia. Two suspects—one of whom is allegedly barred from possessing guns as a felon—were arrested on charges that include aggravated animal abuse and weapons violations. Bond reductions have already been granted, and investigators warn even more charges may follow.

Brutalizing an animal in this manner is not only appalling, it is a clear predictor of broader violence. Swift and severe legal consequences are essential to protect other vulnerable beings and to send an unmistakable message that such cruelty will never be tolerated. The alleged offenders must face the harshest sentence permissible under law, including a lifelong prohibition on owning animals.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear County Attorney Nicholson,

Reports indicate that deputies discovered a dog with catastrophic head injuries after neighbors heard a gunshot and suspected abuse. According to authorities, veterinary imaging confirmed the animal had been shot and investigators also seized drugs and an illegal firearm from the scene. Tragically, the dog did not survive.

These allegations describe unimaginable suffering: blunt-force trauma compounded by a gunshot to the head. Such extreme violence against a defenseless creature demands an equally strong response from the justice system. We respectfully urge your office to prosecute every applicable felony and misdemeanor to the fullest extent, seek a sentence that includes significant incarceration and fines, and request a permanent ban on animal ownership for the defendants.

Taking decisive action will honor the life that was lost and deter future acts of cruelty in Jasper County.

Sincerely,
