Target: Suzanne M. Rivera, President of Macalester College
Goal: Stop depriving animals of food and water in cruel Skinner boxes at Macalester College.
Allegations surrounding Macalester College’s use of live animals in educational settings are deeply disturbing and raise serious ethical concerns. Dr. Neal Barnard, a decades-long advocate for the cessation of animal testing in academia, has filed a lawsuit claiming that the college misrepresents its commitment to animal welfare. According to Dr. Barnard, the college continues to utilize outdated and cruel experiments, such as those involving the notorious Skinner box, which deprives animals of food and water for experimental purposes. These experiments, supposedly designed to teach psychological concepts, are said to violate modern ethical standards and potentially mislead the public regarding the college’s actual practices.
Dr. Barnard’s lawsuit further asserts that these practices not only inflict unnecessary suffering on animals but also contradict Macalester’s own claims of adhering to the highest ethical standards in animal research. The shocking testimony from those involved in administering these experiments, including reports of animals being disposed of after testing, paints a grim picture of a college stuck in antiquated methods that should have been abandoned long ago. As Dr. Barnard has highlighted, no medical schools in North America use animal testing in their educational curricula, pointing to a significant shift in societal norms and scientific understanding regarding the treatment of animals.
The demand for change is urgent and necessary. Educational institutions must evolve and apply contemporary teaching methods that prioritize humane treatment of animals. By ceasing live animal experiments when alternatives are available, Macalester College has the opportunity to align its practices with current ethical standards and set a positive example for others. Therefore, the petition demands an immediate halt to the use of live animals in the college’s programs, urging Macalester to remove misleading statements from its communications regarding animal welfare.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear President Rivera,
Recent allegations by Dr. Neal Barnard regarding your institution’s use of live animals in educational settings are deeply troubling and warrant immediate attention. Dr. Barnard has filed a lawsuit claiming that Macalester is perpetuating outdated and cruel animal experiments, including the use of Skinner boxes, which subject animals to deprivation and potential harm. This not only contradicts the college’s stated commitment to the highest ethical standards in animal welfare, if true, but also raises significant concerns about the treatment of these voiceless beings under your care.
The shocking testimonies of individuals involved in these experiments indicate a system that allows for the suffering of animals, including reports of euthanizing them in inhumane ways after experiments. Such practices are not only ethically indefensible but are also inconsistent with the progressive educational models being adopted across other academic institutions. As society increasingly recognizes the moral responsibility we hold towards animals, Macalester has the chance to align itself with contemporary ethical values by adopting humane teaching alternatives.
We implore Macalester College to stop the use of live animals in all educational settings, especially when alternative methods exist. By taking decisive action, your institution can lead by example and uphold the ethical treatment of all living beings, ensuring that no animal should endure unnecessary suffering for educational purposes. It is time to clean up the practices at Macalester and truly adhere to the principles of animal welfare that the college claims to uphold.
Sincerely,

REALLY!!! WHAT’S WRONG WITH THESE BARBARIC MONSTERS!! WHAT DOES KILLING ALL GOD’S CREATURES SERVE!!
IT SERVES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!
STOP THESE ‘DARK AGE’ EXPERIMENCE NOW!!!
There is no reason to use animals in training or experiments of any kind; humans and animals are not interchangeable and very little is learned from experiments like this that could not be learned with a comupter
Talk about waste, fraud and abuse. I have maintained for a very long time that too many universities and government agencies that use animals in research waste tons of money given to them by our government on wasteful, ineffective animal experimentation. Using old, tried and over used methods of animal experimentation over and over again says to me universities are trying to figure out what to do with all the money they are continually receiving in government grants. I absolutely don’t agree with the current administrations slashing and burning of funds from vital agencies but I hope funding is cut from universities doing things like this. I think the American people would be shocked to know just how much ridiculous, wasteful and extremely painful experiments are being carried out behind closed doors and unquestioned for years and years. Cut funding and stop inflicting pain and suffering on animals in labs for meaningless experiments…if we can be eyeing exploring Mars, we can certainly come up with an alternative to animal research from the dark ages.
