Demand Justice for Poisoned Rescue Dogs

Target: Dr. Maria Panayiotou, Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Cyprus

Goal: Enforce stricter animal welfare laws and investigate the poisoning of pets to ensure justice and prevent further cruelty.

The De Bono family, who have turned their home into a haven for rescued animals, recently endured a devastating tragedy. While on holiday, their rescue dog Hutch suddenly collapsed and died. Days later, another dog suffered severe convulsions, narrowly surviving what appeared to be deliberate poisoning. Authorities suspect their pets were targeted in their quiet rural neighborhood.

This tragic incident is part of a larger pattern of systemic neglect and cruelty toward animals in Cyprus. Chained dogs left in punishing conditions and the widespread availability of dangerous chemicals are evidence of a serious welfare crisis. Disturbingly, when the De Bonos attempted to report the crime, they were warned that, as foreigners, they might face backlash. Bureaucratic barriers further deter victims of animal cruelty from seeking justice.

Such incidents tarnish Cyprus’s image as a welcoming destination for expatriates and investors. The lack of strict enforcement of animal protection laws, coupled with underfunded sanctuaries, allows these inhumane acts to continue. Immediate action is necessary to address this culture of cruelty and ensure justice for Hutch and other innocent animals.

We urge the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged poisoning. Enforce stricter animal welfare laws and regulations, including controlling access to toxic substances. Increase support and funding for animal shelters and sanctuaries to better protect vulnerable animals.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Dr. Maria Panayiotou,

The recent poisoning of rescue dogs in Ergates underscores an urgent need for stronger animal welfare protections in Cyprus. Hutch, a beloved rescue dog, died suddenly from suspected poisoning, while another dog narrowly survived. The family affected by this tragedy encountered barriers when trying to report the crime, reflecting a concerning lack of systemic support for victims of animal cruelty.

This incident is not isolated. Reports of chained, neglected, and abused animals, combined with the availability of deadly chemicals, point to a widespread issue. Moreover, underfunded animal sanctuaries struggle to meet the needs of vulnerable animals, leaving many unprotected.

We respectfully urge the Ministry to investigate this case thoroughly and implement stricter animal welfare laws, including better control over toxic substances. Additionally, increasing support for animal shelters will protect both animals and residents, while enhancing Cyprus’s reputation as a compassionate and responsible nation.

By addressing these issues decisively, Cyprus can ensure justice for Hutch and create a safer, more humane society for all.

Sincerely,

  1. Cyprus is a wicked place; I hope more is done to help animals.

  2. What a terrible place for animals to be. The laws must be changed to protect the innocent animals. Sounds like this is an awful place to live. 😖
