Demand Accountability and Protection Amid Ongoing Tiger Deaths

Target: Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India

Goal: Strengthen conservation efforts to address unexplained tiger deaths and improve transparency in data reporting.

The majestic tiger, an iconic species vital to India’s ecosystem, continues to face threats despite a reported decrease in deaths. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) revealed a 37% drop in tiger mortality in 2024 compared to the previous year, with 115 deaths reported so far. While this reduction is encouraging, concerns linger over the causes of these deaths, which include natural and unnatural factors such as territorial conflicts, accidents, poisoning, and electrocution.

Critical gaps remain in data reporting, with many states failing to provide timely forensic reports to ascertain the exact causes of tiger deaths. Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, regions with high tiger populations, continue to record significant mortalities, with Madhya Pradesh reporting an increase from the previous year. This situation underscores the urgent need for improved accountability and intensified efforts to protect tiger habitats and mitigate threats such as habitat fragmentation and human-wildlife conflicts.

The decline in poaching-related deaths is a testament to conservation measures, but more needs to be done. Every tiger lost is a blow to biodiversity and the ecological balance. The NTCA must ensure transparency in reporting, expedite forensic investigations, and strengthen protective measures to safeguard these endangered animals.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear PM Modi,

The recent report on tiger deaths in 2024 highlights a promising 37% reduction in mortality compared to the previous year. However, the data also reveal persistent threats to tiger populations, with significant numbers of deaths occurring due to unexplained or preventable causes.

Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, both home to substantial tiger populations, recorded alarmingly high numbers of fatalities, with Madhya Pradesh reporting an increase. Many of these deaths remain unexplained, as states lag in submitting forensic reports and detailed causes of death. This lack of transparency hinders conservation efforts and raises concerns about the safety of these iconic animals.

We urge the NTCA to take immediate steps to improve data collection and reporting mechanisms, ensure timely forensic investigations, and address emerging challenges such as human-wildlife conflict and habitat fragmentation. Strengthening habitat protection and increasing accountability will safeguard tiger populations and preserve biodiversity for generations to come.

Sincerely,
