Demand Justice for Another Orca Dead at SeaWorld

**Target:** Cynthia Hollen, CEO of SeaWorld Entertainment, Inc.
**Goal:** Hold SeaWorld accountable for its treatment of orcas like Keto and demand the immediate closure of marine parks exploiting these animals.

The tragic death of Keto, a 29-year-old orca, underscores the horrific exploitation faced by animals confined in marine parks. Born at SeaWorld Orlando in 1995, Keto was allegedly subjected to a life of confinement, breeding, and forced performances, separated from his mother at only four years old. His transition across various SeaWorld parks before being transferred to Loro Parque in Spain epitomizes a lifetime devoid of freedom. Here, Keto was bordered by the cruel confines of small tanks, living a life far removed from the vast ocean he should have called home.

During his years at Loro Parque, Keto was reportedly forced to perform meaningless tricks and bred with relatives, leading to further instances of loss and grief, including the premature death of his daughter, Vicky. The psychological impact of confinement was evident, as Keto demonstrated unnatural behaviors, including biting on concrete and floating aimlessly—signs of distress associated with inadequate living conditions. Around 40 orcas and over 500 other dolphins and whales have reportedly died in SeaWorld’s facilities, a damning indictment of how these parks prioritize profits over animal welfare.

In light of these appalling allegations, it is imperative to demand accountability from SeaWorld for the mistreatment of orcas. The exploitation that Keto endured exemplifies a wider pattern of abuse in marine entertainment.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Hollen,

The recent reports surrounding the unfortunate death of Keto, an orca who suffered due to the exploitation he experienced during his brief life at SeaWorld and Loro Parque, highlight a severe and distressing pattern of animal mistreatment that can no longer be ignored. Keto’s life, allegedly marked by confinement, separation from his mother, and breeding practices, reflects the broader issue at marine parks that neglect the welfare of incredible creatures who deserve freedom and dignity.

It is with urgency that we call upon SeaWorld to take accountability for the alleged suffering inflicted on Keto and the many other marine creatures in its care. The fact that Keto succumbed within the confines of a marine park, when orcas can live to over 60 years in the wild, reveals the depth of the tragedy at hand. Reports of Keto’s unnatural behaviors and the numerous orcas who have met untimely ends in captivity serve as a wake-up call for necessary reform. The time has come to acknowledge the profound emotional and physical toll that captivity takes on these intelligent beings.

We urge SeaWorld to take immediate action towards closing its marine parks and relocating current marine mammals to seaside sanctuaries where they can thrive and regain a semblance of their natural lives. Let Keto’s story serve as a catalyst for change, and let it ignite a long-overdue commitment to the ethical treatment of all marine animals.

Sincerely,
