Animals Reportedly Rescued From Cockfighting Property Deserve Justice

Target: Mr. David Yost, Attorney General of Ohio

Goal: Investigate and ensure strict penalties for individuals allegedly responsible for the abuse and mistreatment of animals, and enforce stronger animal welfare regulations.

The Humane Society of Delaware County in Ohio is investigating a disturbing case of alleged animal abuse and potential cockfighting at a residence in Sunbury. Following complaints from neighbors about an injured dog, society staff and Delaware County Sheriff’s deputies executed a search warrant at 9442 Todd Street Road. Jana Cassidy, the executive director of the Humane Society, reported that several dogs in need of veterinary care were found on the property, along with evidence suggestive of cockfighting.

The individual responsible for the animals, who has not yet been charged, voluntarily surrendered 90 animals, including nine dogs, six rabbits, and various birds such as chickens, ducks, turkeys, doves, and parakeets. The 11-acre property is owned by Efrain and Maria Quezada but was leased to a self-employed construction worker. While some animals were receiving care, many were apparently breeding without control.

Cassidy emphasized the necessity for all animals to have adequate food, water, and shelter. The Delaware County Dog Warden and a team of volunteers have since housed the rescued animals. Take stringent measures to hold individuals accountable for alleged animal neglect and cruelty, ensuring the well-being of all animals involved.
