Target: Ryan Anderson, Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities
Goal: Implement wildlife crossings on roads to reduce roadkill and preserve wildlife populations.
The wilderness of Alaska is renowned for its stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife. However, the presence of roads in these remote areas poses a significant threat to the state’s unique and precious fauna. Wildlife collisions on roads are becoming alarmingly frequent, endangering not only animals, but also the safety of travelers.
Alaska’s rugged terrain and remote locations make it challenging for wildlife to navigate the expanding road networks. As roads bisect their habitats, animals are forced to cross these perilous paths in search of food, water, or mating partners. This puts them on a collision course with vehicles, resulting in a tragic loss of animal lives and property damage.
The consequences of these collisions extend beyond immediate harm. Wildlife populations in Alaska are already grappling with habitat loss due to climate change and human activities. Increased roadkill further exacerbates the pressure on these species, potentially pushing some to the brink of extinction.
Sign the petition below to demand that the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities take immediate action to implement wildlife crossings on roads.
PETITION LETTER:
Dear Commissioner Anderson,
The wilderness of Alaska is a national treasure, home to a diverse range of wildlife. However, the ever-expanding road networks in this beautiful state are taking a toll on our fauna. Wildlife collisions on roads are not only heartbreaking, but also pose a danger to human travelers.
The rugged Alaskan terrain presents challenges for wildlife trying to navigate these roads. They are compelled to cross dangerous paths in search of basic necessities, putting them at risk of colliding with vehicles. This not only results in the loss of valuable animal lives, but also causes property damage and endangers human lives.
Beyond immediate harm, these collisions add to the growing pressures that Alaska’s wildlife faces due to habitat loss and climate change. Our unique and precious species could face extinction if we do not take action.
It is imperative that we prioritize the implementation of wildlife crossings on roads to mitigate this crisis. These crossings will safeguard our wildlife, reduce roadkill, and ensure the safety of all road users.
Sincerely,

There are a few wildlife crossings and they have been very successful. Collisions with wildlife have taken a horrible toll in death to both animals and humans. These overpasses make a huge difference in the death counts on highways. I think it isa goal for all states and in many places. Excellent!
