A nesting mother swan met with a horrific fate in New York. Three teenagers stand accused of breaking onto the grounds of Manlius Swan Pond in the dead of night and beheading the swan, whom local residents had named Faye. To make matters even worse, they then allegedly abducted Faye’s four young cygnets while leaving behind Faye’s mate, named Manny.
Investigators believe the suspects took Faye’s body to a relative’s house and cooked and ate her. They reportedly confessed to authorities, claiming they were hunting, that they believed Faye to be a duck, and that they planned to keep the cygnets as pets. Why they were apparently “hunting” after midnight and in an area beloved by the community and protected by the town’s government remains a mystery. The cygnets, thankfully, are now under the care of a biologist.
The suspects were charged with grand larceny and criminal mischief, but they also need to face charges for the illegal act of allegedly killing a swan and any associated animal cruelty offenses. Sign the petition below to demand justice in this disturbing case.

Dear DA Fitzpatrick,
The shocking killing of a swan and abduction of her young offspring, for which three suspects stand accused, has put Manlius in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. This swan, Faye, was an adored fixture in the community and protected by local mandate at her Manlius Swan Pond residence. The suspects’ claims that they were somehow unaware of this popular animal’s existence or the town’s longstanding association with swans appears highly doubtful. Also troubling is the defense that these young people allegedly decided to go duck hunting well after midnight and needed to jump the fence on a public property to do so.
If these suspects indeed had full knowledge of the criminality of their alleged acts, then the charges should not end at larceny and “mischief.” Killing a swan—and a locally protected one at that—is illegal in this state, and prosecution and possible sentencing must reflect the viciousness (including reported decapitation) of the apparent offenses. Charges of animal cruelty can and should be pursued because this swan, the mate and cygnets she left behind, and the community that loved her deserve justice.

These teenagers need to be punished and if they are under the age of 18 their parents need to be held accountable. Perhaps if parents were punished with them they would start to care about what their kids are up to. This disgusts me. According to all facts of this crime,it’s clear these individuals knew exactly what they were doing. They climbed a fence in the middle of the night and deliberately stole a protected animal and her young. They took a beloved mother swan and sadistically, viciously beheaded her. And there is absolutely no possible way that teenagers do not know the difference between a duck and a swan. Small children know the difference. They left her babies motherless and even took them as well, more than likely to eat at a later time. This is not maudlin, an overly harsh description, or an exaggeration. This was a deliberate, sadistic, vicious act of animal torture and cruelty. Acts of extreme animal cruelty resulting in maiming, extreme pain ,or death have been signed in to federal law as felony level crime. It’s also true that swans have strong emotional bonds and factually, swans mate for life. It’s likely that her now traumatized mate will spend the rest of his life alone. Her young babies will also know the loss of their mother for some time. They likely witnessed or at least heard their mother being beheaded at which time she would have been screaming. These individuals knew what they were doing, They certainly did know the pain and death they were inflicting onto that defenseless animal. The fact that the swan had a name and was beloved by the community further compounds their crime. They were getting away with doing this to their community, stealing, beheading, and even eating her. Their particular teenage act of rebellion was to enact a deliberate, callous, gruesome act of animal torture and cruelty, and an untimely death to a protected swan for no other reason other than they wanted to do it. Being a teenage person or any other reason is no real excuse for any of it. Respectfully, I implore you to hold these individuals fully accountable for their despicable, sickening crime of animal cruelty. I request that you penalize them to the fullest extent of the law. Please impart a court order of mandatory psychiatric eval and treatment. Please ban them from animal ownership or unsupervised interaction with any animal for at least ten years. Please give the justice that animal and her mate and signets deserve in this case. And make certain these individuals are penalized for their crime and made fully aware of the gravity of their actions.
I just hope that the people in this community feel strongly enough and ‘fired-up’ enough to teach these arrogant pissants a lesson that they will NEVER forget.

This happened in the village I live in – this swan pond is literally a 3 minute walk from where I live. My husband and I would walk past the swan pond almost daily or drive by daily for the last 13 years and would always visit Faye and Manny. This was such a devastating blow to our community and so absolutely horrific and shocking – you should see the beautiful memorial set up for her at the pond. I truly hope justice is served for Faye, her babies and for Manny. Seeing him alone and depressed is horrendous. For these people to break into the swans area where Faye was NESTING in peace, and could not defend herself because their wings are clipped and then be brutally murdered is beyond concerning, barbaric and disgusting.
