Success: Georgia Aquarium Will Not Import Beluga Whales

Target: Ric O’Barry, former dolphin trainer turned marine animal activist

Goal: Applaud that 18 beluga whales will no longer be imported from Russia to the Georgia Aquarium.

Thanks in part to petitions like ForceChange’s Protest Importation of Beluga Whales, 18 beluga whales will no longer be imported from Russia to the Georgia Aquarium. The Georgia Aquarium gave up its legal battle to import the 18 beluga whales from Russia and said it would not challenge a federal judge’s ruling to block their arrival.

The whales were caught in the wild near Russia and kept under the care of Russian scientists while the Georgia Aquarium fought to acquire them. The legal battle had been ongoing for nearly two years.

The aquarium said beluga whales are endangered in some areas and “near threatened” around the world. The end of this dispute marks a huge win for animal rights activists who fought to prevent the animals from enduring a stressful transport and life of captivity. Applaud that these 18 beautiful creatures won’t have to endure a taxing trip and life in an aquarium.

Dear Mr. O’Barry,

I’m writing to thank you for being a leader in the fight to stop the Georgia Aquarium from importing 18 beluga whales from the wild in Russia. Now we have achieved success and these innocent wild animals won’t have to endure a long and stressful trip only to be kept in captivity in an aquarium.

Beluga whales around the world are in danger and must be protected now more than ever. This success is a huge win for animal rights activists around the world, and we must keep working to protect more animals.
