Stop Poisoning of Pets From Drug Contamination in Public Spaces

Target: Andy Burnham, UK Prime Minister

Goal: Prevent drug contamination in public spaces endangering pets.

In the UK, a troubling rise in the number of pets requiring urgent veterinary care due to drug poisoning has been reported. A staggering increase of 87% in cases of animals ingesting recreational drugs, including cannabis and nicotine, has emerged over the past two years. Pets, particularly dogs, are consuming hazardous substances found in abandoned food, human waste, or even drug residues in public areas. This alarming trend places animals in grave danger, with incidents leading to severe health crises and emotional distress for pet owners.

Dogs have suffered life-threatening drug ingestion after coming into contact with tainted materials left behind by drug users. Lola, a jack Russell-pug mix, showed alarming symptoms after consuming something in a cemetery, which local authorities have acknowledged as a site where drugs have been seized. Similarly, Tokyo, a Labrador, exhibited severe adverse effects while hiking after ingesting cannabis. These incidents highlight the urgent need for protective measures to ensure the safety of pets in public spaces and discourage drug littering, which poses risks not only to animals but also to the community at large.

Immediate action is necessary to prevent further tragedies and to protect the health of our beloved pets. The situation demands the implementation of stringent regulations regarding the disposal of recreational drugs and the need for public awareness campaigns to educate individuals on the dangers of leaving substances that could harm animals.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear PM Burnham,

The alarming increase in cases of pet poisoning due to recreational drug ingestion has reached a crisis level, as evidenced by the latest reports from the UK’s emergency poison centre for pets. Last year saw the highest number of calls, along with a staggering 87% increase in cases compared to 2021. Pets, especially dogs, are suffering severe health consequences after consuming substances found in contaminated food or human waste in public areas. Lola’s near-fatal experience in a cemetery and Tokyo’s terrifying symptoms while hiking are just two instances highlighting the grave dangers pets face due to ongoing drug littering.

We urge you to take action to implement stricter regulations aimed at preventing drug contamination in public spaces, ensuring the safety of pets, and ultimately fostering healthier communities. Animals deserve protection from harm, and it is imperative to address this urgent issue without delay.

Sincerely,
