Crack Down on Cruel Factory Farming, Not Animal Welfare Activists

Target: Carla Rodriguez, Sonoma County, CA District Attorney

Goal: Hold slaughterhouse facilities accountable for causing immense suffering for animals.

The recent conviction of a student, Zoe Rosenberg, for taking four chickens from a Petaluma poultry slaughterhouse highlights a disturbing pattern of alleged animal cruelty within the animal agriculture industry. Instead of being recognized for her efforts to rescue sick and neglected animals, Rosenberg now faces severe legal penalties. The shocking reality is that individuals such as the owners and operators of these facilities may continue to operate with impunity, while those attempting to intervene on behalf of animals suffer daunting repercussions.

Rosenberg, along with members of the organization Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), entered the slaughterhouse disguised as workers and took the chickens, which they later named Poppy, Ivy, Aster, and Azalea. The distressing circumstances these animals faced underpin the rationale for Rosenberg’s actions. Furthermore, the claims from Petaluma Poultry and the Sonoma County Farm Bureau paint a troubling picture of harassment and abuse against activists, while the conditions that led to Rosenberg’s intervention remain unaddressed.

Allegations of animal cruelty in the industry must not be overlooked. Without adequate repercussions for those who mistreat animals, the status quo will continue, perpetuating suffering. Therefore, it is imperative for authorities to pursue accountability for harmful practices at poultry facilities. This demand for justice is essential not only for the animals affected but also for the communities that the agriculture industry serves.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear DA Rodriguez,

The conviction of Zoe Rosenberg, who took four sick and neglected chickens from a Petaluma poultry slaughterhouse, underscores a critical issue regarding the treatment of animals within our agricultural system. Rosenberg’s actions reveal the distressing and inhumane conditions these birds were subjected to. Instead of applauding her bravery, the legal system has severely penalized her, while the cruelty at these facilities remains unchallenged.

Rosenberg and her fellow activists sought to save lives in a situation where the animals were suffering. Yet, in the wake of her legal battles, facilities like Petaluma Poultry are allowed to continue perpetuating cruel treatment of animals. The statements made by representatives of these industries, equating animal welfare efforts with criminal behavior, only further obfuscate the critical issues surrounding animal rights and welfare.

It is essential for the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office to investigate the claims of animal cruelty within these facilities and take appropriate action against those involved. The public demands justice for vulnerable creatures subjected to neglect and suffering. Accountability must be established within the animal agriculture sector to prevent ongoing cruelty and ensure the protection of all animals.

Sincerely,
