Success: Germany Bans Grinding Up Chicks Alive

Chicks Benjamin Rondel

Target: Christian Schmidt, German Agriculture Minister

Goal: Applaud Germany for becoming the first country to ban the practice of “chick shredding.”

Day old chicks are routinely thrown into a macerator which grinds up them up alive or thrown into the trash where they will suffocate to death. This is due to the fact that in the egg industry, freshly hatched male chicks are considered “unprofitable” because they are unable to lay eggs. Thanks to public outcry, including the voices here at ForceChange, Germany became the first country to ban the practice of “chick shredding,” which will save about 45 million chicks annually.

The German government teamed up with scientists to find an alternative to this heinous practice. Thanks to groundbreaking technology, the egg industry can now determine the sex of the chick before they hatch. Now eggs that are identified as male will be taken away from the hatchery.

Mr. Schmidt stated that the new technology will fully be put into practice by the end of 2016. Animal activists are hoping that with this new technology along with Germany’s new ban, more countries will follow suit. Sign our petition “Prevent Suffering of Baby Chicks” if you want to continue the fight in other countries, including the U.S. Applaud Mr. Schmidt and German citizens for being innovative and finding new ways to help prevent future cruelty to animals.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Christian Schmidt,

In the egg industry, “chick shredding” is a common practice that takes the lives of millions of baby chickens annually. Thanks to your hard work along with the help of scientists and German citizens, “chick shredding” is now banned in all of Germany. Instead groundbreaking technology will be used in hatcheries that are able to determine the sex of the chick before they hatch. This will save about 45 million chicks annually.

In addition, Germany is the first country to ban this practice. Hopefully Germany’s recent ban on this practice along with the new technology will inspire other countries to follow suit.

I just wanted to thank you for all your hard work and for taking this huge step in helping animals throughout Germany.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

  1. HOW BARBARIC, JUST LETS HOPE THEY DO WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO DO. THEY WILL TRY GETTING AWAY WITH DOING IT THE OLD WAY, PROBABLE CHEAPER, SCUM BAGS

  2. Myrna Burdick says:

Thank you to the people of Germany for an end to
the horrific death suffered by the male chicks. I am still a little confused as to what is to become of the males????

  3. If Germany can do this, then the United States should be
next, followed by all other countries… I also believe
this new technology could have been discovered earlier,
or perhaps has already been discovered in America, but
America doesn’t place much value on farmed animals, ex-
cept money-wise… considering I just signed my 4th or
5th petition against Tyson foods for torturing poultry
in America…(from Mercy For Animals)… But changes are
happening little by little, and for even one country to
ban the grinding up of chicks, tells me there is more
hope for animals in our world, and The Sacredness of
    All Life….

  4. Michelle McCann says:

Thank you Germany, hope we can follow in you footsteps to be a kind and civilized country and not do severe and unjust behavior towards animals that really need a voice!

  5. sandra mason says:

I’m amazed that any human being has the ability to toss the little fluffy cheeping chicks away like that.

  6. This cruel insanity is beyond reason — how can any level-headed, merciful human engage in such sadistic brutality & think it’s typical & routine behavior! — Thank God for sanity, for rationality, for compassion.
