Stop Slaughtering Lambs, Pigs, and Chickens in Easter Celebrations

Target: Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

Goal: Promote plant-based meals during Easter to reduce animal suffering and align with Christian values of compassion.

Common practices surrounding Easter celebrations involve the consumption of lambs, pigs, and chickens who endure extreme confinement and violence before their slaughter. This stark contradiction to the love and mercy that the Christian faith teaches raises serious moral questions. Instead of observing Easter through the suffering of innocent animals, followers could honor the essence of Christ’s teachings by choosing compassion and recognizing the sentience of animals.

In many cases, these animals live in conditions that provide little to no welfare considerations, facing deprivation and physical torment. As believers reflect on the core message of love exemplified in Jesus’ teachings, a choice to abandon practices that contribute to such suffering becomes not only a moral imperative but a deeply spiritual act. Promoting a vegan diet, particularly during key celebrations like Easter, aligns with the teachings to protect creation and act with kindness.

The demand for change is essential in order to foster a culture of compassion instead of cruelty. Encouraging plant-based meals during Easter celebrations and beyond could lead to a significant reduction in animal suffering. In order to honor the values of love and mercy central to Christianity, it is crucial to advocate for practices that do not involve the needless killing of fellow beings.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Coakley,

As Easter approaches, a time meant to celebrate love, compassion, and the resurrection, the continued consumption of animals such as lambs and pigs is causing significant moral distress among many in the faithful community. These animals endure lives filled with extreme confinement and eventual violent slaughter, which stands in stark contrast to the teachings of Christ to show love and compassion toward all living beings.

The lives of these animals, filled with suffering and fear, are unjustifiable acts that many Christians are beginning to question. There is a growing awareness of the emotional lives of these animals and the pain they experience. The teachings of Jesus, as depicted in scripture, encourage an understanding of the sanctity of all life, reinforcing a call to choose mercy over violence.

In light of these concerns, we respectfully urge the Conference to lead a transformative campaign urging the faithful to adopt plant-based meals during Easter and other significant religious observances. By embracing this compassionate approach, not only can the church promote a deeper understanding of love, but it can also demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of all creatures.

Sincerely,
