Stop Delaying Action to Curb Epidemic of Animal Cruelty

Target: Jacinta Allan, Premier of Victoria, Australia

Goal: Enact animal welfare reform to prevent cruelty and ensure appropriate punishment for offenders after disturbing cases of neglect and abuse.

The Victorian government has failed to act on its long-promised animal welfare reforms, resulting in continued, shocking instances of animal cruelty. Reports of a bulldog forced to live in squalor on a balcony surrounded by its own waste, and a Maltese shih tzu being beaten with a metal pole, highlight the urgent need for legislative action to address these severe issues. The existing animal welfare laws appear to be outdated, leaving vulnerable animals unprotected and suffering, while offenders face minimal consequences for their actions.

Despite a decade of promised reforms, including a new animal care and protection bill aimed at modernizing the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1986, the legislation has been shelved indefinitely. Under the proposed new laws, minimum care requirements and clearer definitions of cruelty would help to ensure that animals are treated with the dignity they deserve.

Immediate action is necessary to provide robust protections for animals across Victoria. The time for promises is over; it is imperative that the government revives and enacts comprehensive animal welfare reforms without further delay to protect animals from cruelty and promote accountability for those who harm them.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Premier Allan,

Reports of a bulldog trapped on a balcony living amidst its own faeces, as well as the tragic beating of a Maltese shih tzu with a metal pole, have underscored the inadequacies of the current animal welfare laws in Victoria. The public outcry surrounding these incidents highlights a critical failure to address animal suffering, as offenders are often left unpunished or face minimal consequences for their actions.

Despite your government’s stated commitment to reforming the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, the bill has been removed from the parliamentary agenda following years of delays. This stagnation not only reflects a disregard for the well-being of animals but also perpetuates a culture in which egregious acts of cruelty can occur with impunity. Victorians care deeply for animals and expect meaningful protections to be put in place. The proposed legislative changes would provide vital minimum care standards and increase penalties for cruelty, ensuring that offenders are held accountable for their actions.

It is imperative that the government prioritizes the introduction of a comprehensive animal welfare bill to prevent future abuse and protect vulnerable animals. The time for inaction has passed; the welfare of innocent animals is at stake. Please take immediate steps to enact this vital legislation to ensure that cruelty to animals is met with serious consequences and that their needs are adequately addressed.

Sincerely,
