Prevent Future Pandemics From Monkeys Transported Under Unsafe Conditions

Target: Martin Makary, Commissioner of the FDA

Goal: Implement strict regulations and penalties for the improper transport of primates to prevent potential pandemics.

The alarming reality surrounding the transport of monkeys for research in the United States poses a severe risk to public health. As reported, a truck transporting around 100 monkeys crashed in Pennsylvania, leading to the escape of at least three monkeys, with authorities scrambling to contain the situation. These trucks, often unmarked and operated by untrained drivers, can cause a potential health crisis by transporting primates known to carry lethal pathogens, including Ebola, tuberculosis, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The anonymity of such transport leaves the public unwittingly at risk, unaware that they may be sharing their roads with what could be the next pandemic.

Investigations into the health risks posed by nonhuman primates highlight seemingly severely flawed safety protocols inherent in the commercial importation and transport of these animals. Despite regulations requiring the screening of these creatures for deadly pathogens, many diseases can go undetected, surfacing only months later. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has emphasized the grave threat these imported primates present to human health, particularly when they escape into the environment during transportation mishaps. In the last decade alone, over a quarter-million long-tailed and rhesus macaques have been imported into the U.S., significantly increasing the risk of zoonotic diseases entering the human population.

It is imperative that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention takes decisive action to enforce strict regulations regarding the transport of primates. Ensuring the safety of the public and the integrity of health protocols is paramount to avoid future public health crises stemming from neglected transport policies. Therefore, the demand is clear: adopt comprehensive safety measures and penalties for any negligence in the handling and transport of primates within the United States.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Commissioner Makary,

Recent events surrounding the transport of monkeys within the United States reveal alarming lapses in safety protocols that endanger public health. A truck transporting approximately 100 monkeys recently crashed in Pennsylvania, reportedly resulting in several monkeys escaping into a populated area. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by improperly managed transportation of nonhuman primates, which are known carriers of dangerous infectious diseases, including those that could potentially lead to pandemics.

Reports indicate that the trucks used in these operations are often unmarked and driven by untrained individuals, putting communities at risk. The failure to recognize the potential threat these animals pose is unacceptable. We must prioritize the establishment of stringent regulations for transporting these primates, including mandatory safety signage and the use of trained personnel. The current approach is insufficient to protect the public from the dangers associated with zoonotic diseases.

We urge you to take immediate action in implementing strict regulations and penalties for the improper transport of primates. The health of the public demands that these safety measures be enforced to prevent any future threats to our communities.

Sincerely,
