Investigate Mega-Farms With Thousands of Animals Allegedly Crammed in Filthy Conditions

Target: Olivér Várhelyi, European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety

Goal: Reform alleged inhumane conditions and practices at industrial mega-farms across Europe.

A recent investigation by AGtivist has reportedly uncovered disturbing evidence of animal welfare violations at industrial mega-farms throughout Europe. These mega-farms allegedly house thousands of animals in deplorable conditions, with chickens crammed into overcrowded barns lacking proper ventilation and sanitation, and pigs kept in unhealthy environments. Allegations of animal neglect include carcasses left to decompose for weeks and chickens unable to stand due to unnatural growth rates. Such practices raise serious ethical concerns and highlight the urgent need for intervention.

With the European Union’s agricultural landscape increasingly dominated by fewer, larger operations—over 10,000 industrial chicken and pig farms exist across Europe—the impact on animal welfare has become catastrophic. Since 2005, as smaller farms have been largely driven out of business, the number of mega-farms has surged by 56%. In Spain alone, 1,385 new farms were established over the past decade, exacerbating the systemic exploitation of animals. The shocking statistics reveal an alarming trend, wherein the largest farms control a disproportionate share of livestock, leading to income disparities and intensified pressure on animal welfare standards.

It is imperative to address ongoing abuses in the food industry to avert further suffering of farmed animals. The demand for humane treatment of livestock must be met with strict enforcement of animal welfare regulations and harsh penalties for those found violating them. This petition urges decisive action to rectify these alleged injustices and safeguard the lives and wellbeing of countless animals in industrial farming systems across Europe.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Commissioner Várhelyi,

An alarming investigation has reportedly revealed widespread inhumane conditions at industrial mega-farms throughout Europe. These farms, which operate at terrifying scale, allegedly house thousands of animals in cramped, unsanitary environments. Investigative reports have described chickens forced into overcrowded barns, living in their own waste, while carcasses were neglected for weeks. It seems abundantly clear that the pursuit of profit is jeopardizing the welfare of countless animals.

Moreover, as mega-farms proliferate—over 10,000 across the EU—traditional small and medium-sized farms are disappearing, with a drastic reduction of 5.3 million farms between 2005 and 2020. This consolidation has led to extreme income disparities and heightened concerns for animal welfare, as these industrial operations risk prioritizing production over the health and safety of livestock. Conditions are reportedly so dire that chickens are unable to stand, suggesting the time for action is long overdue.

We urge you to take immediate measures to implement more humane standards for farms. Only by implementing and enforcing rigorous welfare rules can we hope to alleviate the distressing situations uncovered in these industrial farms.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
