Target: Cascade County District Attorney

Goal: Ensure appropriate punishment for those allegedly responsible for leaving horses to starve and die.

In a distressing incident that has shocked animal welfare advocates and residents alike, two horses were reportedly found in a state of severe neglect in Cascade County, Montana. Following a complaint regarding horses in distress, deputies say they discovered not only two underweight horses but also the remains of two others that perished due to neglect. The images are haunting: one rescuer described arriving at the scene to find a deceased pony with its eyes missing, highlighting the tragic extent of neglect these animals faced as reported by witnesses.

The surviving horses, now under the care of Montana Horse Sanctuary, appeared to be on the brink of death, leading rescuers to fear for their lives without immediate intervention. The former owner of these horses, Susan Kay Jones, reportedly admitted to neglecting them for at least a week, although assessments suggest the situation had persisted much longer. Despite being charged with animal cruelty, an offense classified as a misdemeanor in Montana, it raises a troubling question about the adequacy of penalties for those who inflict such suffering on animals. The current legal framework fails to reflect the severity of such actions, particularly when neglect results in death.

There is an urgent need for tougher penalties for animal neglect to ensure that similar cases do not occur again in the future. It is imperative that the Cascade County legal system sends a strong message against animal cruelty and holds those responsible accountable for their actions. Therefore, this petition demands that appropriate and substantial penalties are imposed on those allegedly responsible for the horrific neglect faced by these horses.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Cascade County District Attorney,

I am writing to bring attention to a deeply troubling case regarding the alleged neglect and abuse of horses in Cascade County. Recent reports suggest that two horses were discovered in dire condition, alongside the remains of two others that died from neglect. Witnesses described a harrowing scene where deceased animals showed horrific signs of suffering, with one noted to have been so severely decomposed that its eyes were missing. The severity of the apparent neglect raises serious concerns about the legal implications and necessary consequences for those involved.

The former owner, Susan Kay Jones, has reportedly admitted to animal cruelty yet faced minimal penalties, as animal cruelty in Montana is currently classified as a misdemeanor. This demonstrates an alarming gap in the legal system when serious neglect leads to the death of innocent animals. The surviving horses, despite being rescued, reportedly continue to suffer the long-term effects of their ordeal, and the community stands united in demanding justice for these animals who cannot speak for themselves.

It is essential for the Cascade County legal system to ensure that anyone who engages in such reprehensible acts faces substantial consequences. Such actions not only harm the animals but also reflect poorly on community standards regarding animal welfare. Therefore, we urge you to take action and impose appropriate punishment for those allegedly responsible for this heart-wrenching case of neglect.

Sincerely,

  6. Another case where the POS will get a slap on the wrist. TAKE everything and sell it. Use the funds to pay for medical expenses and further care. She didn’t give a damn about them and 2 sentient beings Died! Prosecute to the Max and Montana needs to make some better laws about Animal Welfare. Your citizens think nothing about animals’ lives. Killing wolves, bears, buffalo, anything to point a gun at and kill. Very disappointing… it’s time to wake up and speak for the voiceless. All the voiceless.

  7. Montana sucks for ALL animals! I’m surprised animal cruelty is even a misdemeanor in this backwoods redneck idiot state! May a giant volcano take out Montana and Idaho so the wolves and other animals have a reprieve!
